ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul softball team (16-33, 10-16 NSIC) returns home for the final weekend of the regular season as they take on Wayne State (30-18, 15-11 NSIC) and #11 Augustana (43-7, 24-2 NSIC). First pitch is set for noon on both Saturday and Sunday.
In addition to wrapping up the regular season, Concordia will honor
Stephanie Kappes for Senior Day on Sunday by recognizing her in between games. Kappes has been a mainstay in the circle over her four years in a Golden Bear uniform as her 129 appearances and 71 complete games rank second in program history while her 645.1 innings pitched rank third. The senior has picked up 44 wins and struck out 423 in her career. She has shown consistency in her career as she has won at least 10 games, thrown at least 124.0 innings and struck out at least 66 batters in each season for CU. This season, Kappes leads the team with 10 wins and 159.2 innings pitched with 90 strikeouts in 35 appearances.
The Golden Bears will look to wrap up the season on a high note after dropping their last seven games heading into the weekend.
Liz Jarosz provided a bright spot for Concordia on Wednesday at Sioux Falls as she collected four hits, including a homer and a double, in seven trips while driving in three in the doubleheader. Jarosz moved back into a tie for the team lead with
Jamie Fleischhacker and
Haley Schanks with six home runs and improved her RBI total to 28, good for third on the team behind those two.
Concordia enters the weekend with an even record against the Wildcats of Wayne State as the two teams have each won 19 of the 38 previous meetings. After rattling off six straight wins in the series, the Golden Bears lost all three meetings against WSC last season. The Wildcats grabbed a 5-4 win in non-conference play in St. Cloud before sweeping the doubleheader in Wayne with 5-1 and 7-0 wins.
It's been even tougher against the Augustana Vikings as Augie has won the last 12 meetings and 18 of the 23 meetings all-time. Concordia's last win in the series came back on May 14
th, 2010 in Wayne, Neb. in a 2-0 shutout win. Last year, the Vikings swept the Golden Bears in Sioux Falls 10-3 and 8-1.
