MINNETONKA, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul (7-9, 5-3 NSIC) dropped a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon to Minnesota Duluth (10-6, 5-3 NSIC), falling 11-3 and 8-3 in NSIC contests played at Veterans Field. UMD won three of four in the weekend series.
The first game was delayed by an hour and 40 minutes due to rain although the games were played under mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the upper 40's to low 50's. A strong wind was persistent throughout the day, consistently blowing at 20 miles per hour with gusts to as much as 40 and blowing out to left field.
The Bulldogs hit a decisive grand slam in the fifth inning of game one to pull ahead 8-3; and added two home runs in a six run sixth inning in game two to claim a 6-1 lead entering the late innings. UMD hit four home runs in the doubleheader (two each game).
Concordia will hit the road for six games this week with a Tuesday doubleheader at Wayne State followed by a Friday/Saturday series at Bemidji State.
GAME 1: UMD 11, Concordia 3The Bulldogs struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning on four singles. Sophomore southpaw
Kevin Woebke pitched out of trouble, getting all three outs via the strikeout.
Concordia countered with a run in the bottom of the inning as
Ryan Poppitz delivered a two-out single before
Connor Olson drove an RBI double down the left field line.
Woebke continued to mow down the Bulldogs, striking out the side in the second around a stray two out single. He allowed a pair of runs in the third, but once again piled up three strikeouts and at one point had struck out nine Bulldogs while recording just eight outs with one UMD player reaching on a third strike wild pitch in the dirt.
He struck out the first two batters he faced in a 1-2-3 fourth inning and fanned 11 through four frames.
The Golden Bear bats added two runs in a three-hit fourth inning with
David Henke picking up a pair of RBI on a grounder up the middle.
In the fifth, the Bulldogs loaded the bases with one out and chased Woebke from the game with a grand slam by Marco Lucarelli for an 8-3 lead.
UMD added three more in the seventh.
Woebke took the loss, falling to 1-2 despite striking out 11 with just one walk in 4.1 innings.
Junior
Tyler Schmitz finished the final 2.2 innings for Concordia.
Junior shortstop
Eric Fasnacht went 2-3 with a steal and a run while Olson went 1-2 with an RBI and Henke went 1-3 with two RBI.
Kevin Stocke improved to 2-1 with the win, pitching five innings while allowing three runs on five hits.
John Meyer went 3-5 with his fourth home run, two runs and two RBI out of the leadoff spot for UMD. Kyle Comer and Grant Farley each went 3-4, scored two runs each while Comer had two RBI.
GAME 2: UMD 8, Concordia 3Junior lefty
Kody Knaus started strong for Concordia in the series finale, retiring the first six Bulldogs in efficient fashion and got out of the third inning by inducing a double play.
Through five innings, Knaus blanked the Bulldogs on three hits and a walk.
Concordia would play with the lead for the first time in the series (game 1 was a 2-1 walk-off win) when
Cole Peterson's groundout up the middle with runners on second and third and one out scored
Eric Fasnacht. But
Andrew Shotwell was stranded on third base despite
Joe Muench drilling a line drive up the middle as UMD starter Nick Dorfman snared the ball to end the threat.
Peterson added a two-out hit to right field in the fourth inning, moving
Andrew Shotwell to third base on the play but the Golden Bears would once again strand a runner on third with two outs.
With a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning, UMD powered up with a two-run home run by second hitter Josh Denison to start the inning followed by a three-run home run by eighth hitter Beau Goff's three-run homer with two outs.
The two home run inning provided five of UMD's six runs in the frame, ending Knaus' afternoon after six innings of work. He allowed six runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and a walk and would fall to 1-1 with the loss.
UMD added a run in each of the seventh and eighth innings while Concordia tried to make a late charge but like Muench in the second inning, they were victimized by line drives hit right to UMD's defense. The Bulldogs turned a line drive double play to third base to erase Peterson's leadoff single to end the seventh inning before a liner to first base by Fasnacht ended an eighth threat with runners on first and second with a run already home.
Shotwell led off the ninth inning with a first pitch home run to left field, his first career homer which came off high school teammate Matt Mattiacci who was making his second relief appearance of the year and was the first pitch he threw on the day in relief of Dorfman.
Dorfman worked eight innings, allowing two runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and no walks to improve to 2-0.
Shotwell went 2-3 in game two, also drawing a hit by pitch and went 3-6 in the doubleheader. Peterson went 2-3 with an RBI and a walk and Olson went 2-4 with an RBI. Olson was 3-6 with a pair of RBI in the doubleheader.
Alex Wojciechowski led UMD with a 3-5 performance while Denison was 2-5 with the two-run homer.
