Baseball snaps multiple streaks with sweep at Wayne State

Four streaks come to an end as Golden Bears sweep Wildcats

WAYNE, Neb. - Concordia-St. Paul (9-9, 7-3 NSIC) swept Wayne State (12-10, 7-3 NSIC) 9-4 and 8-4 in a Tuesday afternoon doubleheader at Pete Chapman Complex in Northern Sun play.

The victories snapped Concordia's three game losing streak and Wayne State's six game winning streak. It also ended the Golden Bears' nine game losing streak to the Wildcats overall and seven game road losing streak at WSC. They were Concordia's first road contests of the 2015 season, with the previous 16 games counted as neutral site contests.

The Golden Bears remain on the road for a four game series at Bemidji State this Friday and Saturday and return home next Wednesday, April 8 against St. Cloud State.

Tyler Krekling went 3-8 with five RBI from the second spot in the lineup while David Henke went 4-6 with four runs and two RBI out of the eight spot in the doubleheader. The Golden Bear starting pitchers went seven innings in each contest to earn the victories in the first mid-week NSIC action of the season.

Concordia's three pitchers held WSC slugger Nathan Ackerman, the NSIC leader in home runs (8) and RBI (29) entering play to a 1-9 day at the plate with a double and an RBI.

GAME 1: Concordia 9, Wayne State 4
Concordia and Wayne State matched scoring through the first four innings when a 5-run fifth inning broke the game open for the visiting Golden Bears.

Junior right handed starting pitcher Cody Schacht turned it up a notch with a 5-run lead, striking out the last four batters of the game. He retired 10 of the last 11 batters and didn't allow a hit from the fifth inning on. He went the distance to improve to 2-1 as he allowed just one earned run (four total) on five hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

Redshirt freshman Andrew Shotwell remained hot at the plate by going 3-4 with his fifth double and a pair of RBI as he moved up to the second spot in the lineup.

Concordia produced four doubles in the game, as Connor Olson hit his seventh, Eric Fasnacht his sixth and David Henke his second of the year. Henke was 3-3, scoring twice from the eighth spot in the order and Alex LaPorte was 2-3 with two runs from the ninth spot as each player also drew a walk to turn things over to the top of the lineup.

Ryan Poppitz was Concordia's fourth player with a multi-hit game, going 2-4.

Concordia scored a run in the first to start with the lead with WSC countering by tying the score in the bottom of the inning. After two scoreless innings, Concordia scored three times in the third only to be match as WSC put up three unearned runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the score before Concordia continued to put on the pressure with a 5-run fifth inning.

John Roberts made his first start of the year for WSC, allowing four runs (two earned) in four innings. He had previously pitched five-plus innings over three relief appearances before today's start, and did not factor into the decision.

Joey Lenihan took the loss in relief of Roberts, allowing three runs on two hits and a walk in a third of inning to fall to 0-1.

Concordia held WSC slugger Nathan Ackerman to a 1-4 performance with a double, his eighth of the year. But he didn't score or drive in any runs for the Wildcats. Aaron Krier led the team with a 2-4 performance, scoring and driving in a run.

GAME 2: Concordia 8, Wayne State 4
The Golden Bears struck first again, this time with a run in the third inning as Tyler Krekling's two-out single scored David Henke. Krekling also stole second base in the inning but was left on second base.

Wayne State countered with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the inning and another unearned run in the fourth for a 3-1 lead.

Trailing 4-1 entering the top of the sixth inning, Concordia's offense produced another decisive big frame in the middle innings. Eric Fasnacht and Ryan Poppitz delivered one-out RBI hits, with Poppitz smashing his fourth double of the year to give the Golden Bears runners on second and third with one out, trailing 4-3 to chase starter Nick Ragan from the game.

The Wildcat bullpen couldn't slow the Concordia bats down as Henke drove in two runs with a single to center and Krekling added a two-run single that scored a third run on a throwing error in a 7-run inning that gave Concordia an 8-3 lead.

Golden Bear left handed starter Josh Lenz made quick work of the Wildcats with the five run lead, only allowing a runner to reach via two out fielding errors by the defense as he worked seven strong innings to improve to 1-0 on the year in his second start (fifth appearance).

Lenz didn't allow an earned run in his seven innings of work, scattering five singles and a pair of walks with six strikeouts.
