MINNETONKA, Minn. - For the second time in the 2015 season, redshirt freshman
Andrew Shotwell provided a game-winning hit for Concordia-St. Paul (7-7, 5-1 NSIC). On Saturday afternoon at Veterans Field, his walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning sparked a 2-1 win over Minnesota Duluth (8-6, 3-3 NSIC) before the Bulldogs rallied for a 10-5 game two win.
The two teams will complete their season four game series tomorrow at noon at Veterans Field.
GAME 1: Concordia 2, Minnesota Duluth 1The Golden Bear offense was stagnant as UMD game one starting pitcher Bo Hellquist was deceptive and efficient. He retired the Golden Bears in order four times as he worked into the seventh inning and at one point retired 10-straight hitters.
Concordia was able to put two runners on base against him in the first and fifth innings, but left a runner in scoring position each time, scattering three singles and a walk in the first six innings.
But the team rallied in the seventh as freshman
Connor Olson reached on an error to start the frame with junior
Eric Fasnacht staying hot at the plate by lining an RBI triple down the right field line into the corner.
Fasnacht's triple was his second of the year and he would add his fifth double of the year in game two.
It also extended his team lead in RBI to 19 and it chased Hellquist from the game with no outs and the winning run 90 feet from home and the clutch-hitting Shotwell coming up.
In a strong at bat against a quality relief pitcher in Wes Mleziva, Shotwell took the full count offering down the right field line over the head of UMD right fielder Matt Vogt to allow Fasnacht to score the winning run.
Shotwell went 2-3 in the game to lead the Golden Bears.
While Hellquist was excellent, he took the loss as he allowed two runs (one earned) in 6.0 innings on four hits and a walk with five strikeouts.
He was out-dueled by Concordia junior southpaw
Zach Rengel, who scattered five UMD hits (four singles) in a complete game victory to improve to 2-1. He struck out 11 batters and didn't issue a walk in a dominant performance.
After working out of a first and third jam in the second inning, the Bulldogs struck first as Alex Wojciechowski delivered a two-out RBI double to the right center field gap.
Rengel retired the next batter, and only allowed one single the rest of the game as he retired 13 of the final 14 hitters he faced including eight strikeouts.
He set down the final eight Bulldogs of the game including six of the last seven via the strikeout, striking out the side in the sixth inning in the team's top start of the season.
Rengel's victory provided the pitching staff with its second complete game and sixth straight quality start (6 IP, 3 ER or less in 9-inning game; 5 IP, 3 ER or less in 7-inning game).
NOTE: Senior
Kyle Dalton's 14-game hitting streak came to a close, going 0-3 in the game. He started 2015 with a hit in all 12 games after finishing 2014 with a hit in the last two games of the year. He has four three-hit games and seven multi-hit games on the year
GAME 2: Minnesota Duluth 10, Concordia 5In game two, the Bulldogs once again jumped out to the first lead of the contest with two runs in the first although Concordia would counter with
Connor Olson's RBI single up the middle in the bottom of the inning, scoring
Kyle Dalton who led off with a walk. Dalton was on third with one out after
Ryan Poppitz cranked a ground rule double to the left field corner, his third double of the year.
Concordia tied the game at two in the bottom of the fourth inning when Shotwell provided an RBI single up the middle, once again scoring Fasnacht who hit a one out double to left center in the previous at bat.
But Concordia left a runner on third base in the first and third innings, missing an opportunity to grab a lead in the early going.
In the fifth, junior right handed starter
Yuji Suzuki was chased from the contest with no outs as the Bulldogs rallied by drawing a walk and a pair of hit by pitch to load the bases.
All three inherited runners scored in what amounted to a five run inning by UMD on just two hits, a seeing eye single through the left side and a bunt single down the first base line. UMD drew three walks and two HBP in the frame to take a 7-2 lead.
Suzuki wasn't able to keep Concordia's quality start streak intact, allowing five runs on just three hits in 4.0 innings as he fell to 0-2. He had a strong 8-to-1 ground ball to fly ball ratio in the game despite the loss.
UMD added three more runs in the top of the eighth inning for a commanding 10-2 advantage.
The Bulldogs had just two extra base hits in the contest, compiling eight walks and three HBP with Concordia contributing four errors.
The Golden Bears would rally in the eighth, loading the bases with no outs before a double play erased the threat although a run would cross on the play.
Reserves would tack on two more in the bottom of the ninth for Concordia, with
Adam Hildebrandt and
Doug Vanasek drawing pinch hit walks to start the inning and
Alex Eernisse and
Bram Minser knocking in runs with ground balls in the infield.
Right handed reliever
Adam Fredericks pitched three quality innings, allowing one earned run (three total) on three hits and a walk on 44 pitches while Hunter Linsdstrom worked a perfect ninth on just nine pitches.
Austin Vaske picked up the win for UMD, working 6.0 innings allowing two runs on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Three UMD relievers each pitched an inning to finish the game.
Alex LaPorte led Concordia from the bottom of the order by going 2-3 to increase his average to .375.
Concordia was just 4-18 at the plate with runners on base, 2-13 in RBI opportunities and 0-7 with two outs.
UMD was successful moving runners up in 18 of 26 chances and hit .350 (7-20) with runners on base although Concordia's pitchers were successful with two outs, retiring all eight Bulldogs.
