Golden Bears drop a pair to Augustana

Vikings use big innings in each game to pull away

TUCSON, Ariz. - Concordia-St. Paul (1-4) dropped both games of a Saturday afternoon/evening doubleheader 6-0 and 8-3 to Augustana (5-6) at Kino Sports Complex. The losses give Concordia's four straight while Augie has now won five straight.

GAME 1: Augie 6, Concordia 0
Concordia left six runners on base in the game to Augustana's two.

The Vikings' third hitter Jack Goihl ripped a double high off the center field fence to drive in the first run and Alex Beals added a 3-run homer later in the inning for an early 4-0 lead.

From there, Concordia's pitching settled in as starter Zach Rengel worked 4.0 innings, allowing six runs on six hits and three walks with three strikeouts. He took the loss in his first start of 2015.

The Golden Bear bullpen shut down the Viking offense, as sophomores Patrick Courtney (2.0 IP) and Erick Kivi (1.0 IP) allowed just one hit and no walks wiht three strikeouts in 38 pitches combined in their season debuts.

Concordia leadoff hitter Kyle Dalton remained hot, smashing a triple to dead center field to the base of the 403-foot sign. He's hit safely in the first four games to start the year.

David Henke paced the bottom of the lineup from the 8-spot, going 2-3 as he's off to a .400 start to the season.

Augie leadoff hitter Josh Benson led all players with a 3-for-4 performance with an RBI and a stolen base.

Colton Fast picked up his first win, improving to 1-1 as he shutout Concordia over 6.0 innings, allowing just four hits and a walk with five strikeouts on 79 pitches.

GAME 2: Augie 8, Concordia 3
The Golden Bears weren't able to hold a 3-0 lead after three innings as Augustana scored two in the fourth, five in the fifth and another in the sixth inning.

Concordia grabbed an early lead as freshman Adam Hildebrandt delivered his first career hit on a single to left field to score Trevon Bargfrede in the second inning.

Concordia added two more runs in the third inning as Tyler Krekling led off with a single and used an interference on the Augie shortstop rounding second base to score on Connor Olson's double. Olson would score on Kevin Woebke's RBI grounder to first base for a 3-0 lead after three innings.

Junior Cody Schacht was excellent on the mound early in his Concordia debut, cruising through three innings with excellent control and efficiency, scattering three singles.

The Viking offense came alive in the fourth and fifth innings with two in the fourth and five more in the fifth including a 3-run home run by Patrick Fiala and added an insurance run in the sixth inning.

Schacht took the loss, working 5.0 innings allowing seven runs. He struck out four and walked one.

Concordia knocked Augie started Kalib Mauch out of the game in the third inning in his first career start by Lincoln Voss went the rest of the way to pick up the win. Voss went 4.1 shutout innings, scattering four hits and a walk while striking out five.

The Golden Bear offense was led by four players with 2-hit games as Dalton went 2-3, Krekling and Olson went 2-4 with Olson hitting his second double of the year and Bargfrede went 2-3.

Concordia returns to the field at 11 a.m. central time tomorrow against Minot State.
