TUCSON, Ariz. - Concordia-St. Paul (2-4) snapped an early season 4-game skid with a 13-9 win over Minot State (4-7) on Sunday morning at Kino Sports Complex. The win completes a non-conference series sweep of the Beavers.
The game was played with windy and sunny conditions that played a factor throughout for both sides.
Just like on Wednesday's meeting in Concordia's season opener, the game played more like a basketball game in terms of scoring changes. The game featured five lead changes and a tie but it was Concordia's five runs in the seventh and eighth innings that sealed the victory.
After Minot State started with two runs in the first, Concordia answered with four in the bottom of the inning and another in the second before MSU tied it at five after three frames. Minot State reclaimed the lead 6-5 with a run in the fifth.
The sixth inning was big for the Golden Bear bats as freshman
Connor Olson continued the strong start to his career with a bases clearing 3-run double with two outs to pull ahead 8-6. Olson went 2-4 with a pair of doubles and runs and three RBI and is hitting .467 with four doubles.
The Beavers responded with a 3-run seventh inning as Trevor Gust delivered a 2-run double. He went 3-5 with two doubles and five RBI to lead Minot State.
Senior
Kyle Dalton continued his hot hitting in Arizona, going 3-4 with a ground rule double and three runs while driving in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh with a one-out single, bringing him
Trevon Bargfrede. Through six games, Dalton is off to a .500 start (13-26) at the plate and has delivered three 3-hit performances while hitting safely in all six contests.
In the eighth, Bargfrede hit sharp grounder down the right field line to score a pair for the 4-run lead. Barfrede went 3-5 with three RBI.
Junior
Yuji Suzuki would pick up the save in relief for Concordia, working two scoreless innings as he allowed three hits but didn't walk any and struck out four.
Hunter Lindstrom picked up the win out of the bullpen in 1.1 innings, allowing three runs with two strikeouts.
Josh Lenz started for Concordia, working into the sixth inning allowing two earned runs (four total) in 5.2 innings on four hits with five strikeouts.
Minot State reliever Doug Rolfson took the loss, allowing two runs in 1.1 innings to fall to 0-3.
Joining Dalton and Bargfrede with 3-hit games was
Eric Fasnacht, finishing 3-5 with three RBI and a stolen base while three players had 2-hit games.
Concordia returns to the Tucson Invitational Games with an 11 a.m. central time start against Hastings College of Nebraska.
