Concordia looks to close out regular season on a high note

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team (14-12, 10-10 NSIC) wraps up the regular season on the road this weekend as they take on Southwest Minnesota State (3-21, 3-17 NSIC) on Friday and Sioux Falls (15-9, 11-9 NSIC) on Saturday.

THE MATCH-UPS... Concordia holds a record of 31-16 in 47 previous meetings against Southwest Minnesota State. CU has been nearly perfect against the Mustangs in the past 29 meetings, winning 27 of them.

The Golden Bears have had a lot of success against Sioux Falls, winning six of the seven meetings between the schools. CU has won all five meetings since USF has joined the NSIC.

BACK ON JAN. 24... Concordia controlled play on both ends in an 82-46 win over Southwest Minnesota State at the Gangelhoff Center.

The Golden Bears limited the Mustangs to 24.5% (13-53) while shooting 56.9% (33-58) in the win.

Anika Whiting led a balanced CU attack with 16 points on 7-10 shooting while adding four boards, two assists and two blocks.

Mishayla Jones, Ameshia Kearney and Amanda Barton joined Whiting in double figures as 12 different Golden Bears scored.

BACK ON JAN. 23... Concordia outlasted Sioux Falls to grab a 76-72 win in St. Paul.

Lauren Shifflett and Amanda Barton combined for 37 points on 13-20 from the floor and 6-12 from three off the bench for the Golden Bears.

One game after setting a new career high with 19 points, Shifflett surpassed the mark with 21 points on an efficient 6-11 shooting and 4-8 from beyond the arc as she also went 5-6 from the free throw line. She also added a pair of rebounds and assists.

Amanda Barton added 16 points on an even more efficient 7-9 from the field as she went 2-4 from three in 23 minutes off the bench.

LAST TIME OUT... The Golden Bears were swept by Upper Iowa and Winona State at home.

On Friday, Concordia fell short in an 88-79 loss to Upper Iowa at the Gangelhoff Center. Anika Whiting scored 28 of her 30 points in the second half but it wasn't enough to complete the comeback.

On Saturday, the Golden Bears dropped their final regular season home clash to Winona State by a score of 67-59. Anika Whiting capped off Senior Night with her second straight big performance as she finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds in the loss.

RECORD HOLDERS... Last month, Whiting surpassed Jennifer Pozzani as the all-time leading scorer at CU against UMD and surpassed Lisa Harfield as the leading rebounder in the DII-era against SCSU. Whiting now has 1,914 points and 839 rebounds in her career and her 708 field goals made and 453 free throws made rank first and second in program history, respectively.

After just two seasons at Concordia, Kionda Nicks entered this season as both the single-season and career leader in blocks as well as the single-season and career blocks per game record holder. Nicks has blocked a staggering 221 shots in 93 career games, 75 starts, to give her 2.38 blocks per game in her career. Nicks nearly doubled the single-season record last year when she blocked 104 shots for an average of 2.8 per game. This season, she has already collected 64 blocks, best in the NSIC and 12th in the nation, en route to an average of 2.46 per game.

POTENTIAL MATCH-UPS... Concordia currently sits in sixth place in the NSIC South and is lined up to travel to Minnesota Crookston, in third place in the NSIC North, for the opening round of the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament. A lot can change in the final weekend of the regular season as CU sits just a game behind Sioux Falls and two games behind Augustana in the South while UMC sits a game ahead of St. Cloud State and two ahead of Minnesota Duluth and two games behind MSU Moorhead in the North. If Concordia was to sweep their weekend series and Augustana was to lose both of their games then Concordia would leapfrog both Sioux Falls and Augustana to earn the fourth seed and host a first round game in the NSIC/US Bank Tournament.
