SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Concordia-St. Paul (1-10 NSIC, 0-7 South) dropped its season finale 76-21 on Saturday afternoon at Augustana University (9-2 NSIC, 6-1 South) at Kirkeby-Over Stadium.
The two teams traded three touchdowns in a span of 27 seconds in the first quarter, setting up an unusual contest. But it was the host Augustana that was able to score two of the three in that span to take a 21-7 lead for the early upper hand. Concordia's score between the two Augie touchdowns was an 88-yard kickoff return by
Alex Carr as Division II's leader in kick return yards
Alquawn Vickers was unable to compete in the finale. Carr led the team with 158 all-purpose yards on the day, adding 11 carries for 54 yards on the ground.
Although the Vikings went ahead 21-7, Concordia continued to keep pace. The Golden Bears responded with a six-play, 64-yard scoring drive with
Darius Chapes dashing through the middle on a 2-yard run to pull within a touchdown for a 21-14 first quarter scoring deficit.
Chapes was Concordia's top offensive threat on the day, rushing for a season-high 80 yards on 12 runs for a 6.7 average.
The two teams traded four scores in the final 2:15 of the second quarter, including three scores in the final minute before halftime but Concordia was only able to put in one of those scores as redshirt freshman
Trevor Tillett connected with
Jason Oney for a 5-yard scoring strike to pull Concordia to a 38-21 deficit with seven seconds before halftime.
The Tillett-Oney score capped a 9-play, 62-yard touchdown drive that covered 48 seconds in efficient fashion. Oney had three receptions for 29 yards in the game.
But the Vikings were able to take a home field friendly bounce on a squib kick and return it to the 8-yard line while a penalty gave Augie an extra play with no time on the clock as Lucas Wainman converted a field goal to make it a 41-21 halftime score.
From there, it was all Augustana as the Vikings clinched a share of the NSIC South Division championship and bolstered their NCAA Super Region 3 playoff hopes.
Tillett made his fourth start in a row to end the season, completing 16-39 for 177 yards and a touchdown and an interception. He was not sacked in the game and had a long throw of 33 yards to
Anton Bedeaux. Bedeaux had three catches for a team-high 68 yards. His favorite target was
Vantwon Melton with five catches for 34 yards.
Concordia's running game produced a 5.2 average against the Augustana defense, racking up 172 yards - the second highest total of the season - on 33 attempts for a 5.2 average. Senior
