ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul soccer team (4-5, 3-3 NSIC) picked up their second straight road win and third win in their last four games with a 2-1 win at Northern State (4-4-1, 2-3-1 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Bears struck twice just over a minute apart early in the second half to set up a 2-1 victory against the Wolves. Concordia dominated play for much of the game as they built the decisive lead before holding off NSU late in the second half.
Concordia snapped a four game losing streak in Aberdeen, dating back to 2006, as they picked up their fourth win in 19 meetings and third win in the last five matches with Northern State.
Jessica Bianchi opened the scoring with a PK in the 53
rd minute and
Chelsie Lindsay added to the lead in the 54
th minute before Kay Hernandez netted the lone goal for the Wolves in the 84
th minute to bring the score to a 2-1 final margin.
Bianchi and Lindsay were active all day long as they each registered four shots, with two on goal, for the game.
Brooke Salo also fired three shots with one on net.
Emma Gartner got the her third win of the year in net as she made three saves and gave up just the one goal as she came just over six minutes shy of picking up her second consecutive shutout.
Brittany Tietz made five saves for the Wolves in the losing effort.
The first half was all Golden Bears as CSP dominated possession as well as shots as they fired seven shots compared to one for Northern State. Four of Concordia's shots were on net while NSU's lone shot was blocked. After a bit of back and forth play as the two teams felt each other out in the opening minutes, Concordia really turned it on heading into the break with several scoring chances.
Concordia carried that momentum into the second half as the Golden Bears drew a foul in the box to set up a try on a penalty for Bianchi. The senior calmly stepped up and delivered a strike into the back of the net to put CSP on top 1-0. She nearly picked up her second goal of the game as she launched a shot off the crossbar less than a minute later before
Chelsie Lindsay put a shot over Tietz's head to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Wolves picked up their play after the two goals and started creating more chances before Kay Hernandez took a feed from Anna Bondy to cut the gap back to one. Concordia's defense stood tall as they closed out the crucial 2-1 road win.
The Golden Bears will look to continue their strong play tomorrow afternoon as they take on MSU Moorhead at 1 p.m. to close out their four-game road trip.
