Golden Bears rout Dragons 5-0 on Sunday afternoon

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul soccer team (5-5, 4-3 NSIC) dominated on Sunday afternoon as they scored a season-high five goals in a 5-0 win on the road at MSU Moorhead (1-5-3, 1-5-1 NSIC).

The Golden Bears put up an impressive all-around effort with both the offense and defense firing on all cylinders in the win. Concordia built a 1-0 lead heading into the break before really turning it on in the second half with four goals to claim their largest win in NSIC play since a 5-0 win at Minnesota Crookston back on October 7th, 2007. The last time CSP scored five goals in a league game came back on September 27th, 2009 in a 5-1 win against Southwest Minnesota State.

It was a real team effort as all of Concordia's position players got onto the field and contributed solid minutes as the team played their second game of the weekend. Concordia's depth has been a big advantage through the early part of the season.

Concordia was active all day long as they out-shot the Dragons 17-13 as each team put nine shots on net on the day. CSP also out-paced MSUM in corners as they registered seven compared to four for MSU Moorhead.

Emma Gartner continued her strong play in net as she claimed her third shutout on the season. The senior made a season-high nine saves in the win.

Jessica Bianchi and Jade Weller each had career days as Bianchi matched career highs with two goals and five points while Weller scored her first two career goals on the season for Concordia. Taryn MacMillan also added her third goal of the year to round out the scoring. Brooke Salo and McKenzie Buck chipped in assists as well, as quite a few different players got involved in the offense.

Concordia came out of the gate firing as they immediately began to put pressure on the MSUM defense. For much of the first half, the Dragons rebuffed their efforts and held them off the board until Jessica Bianchi netted her first of the day in the 33rd minute on a feed from Brooke Salo to open the scoring. MSU Moorhead mostly stemmed the tide the rest of the half as the Golden Bears went into the half with just a one goal lead.

The score remained 1-0 until the 61st minute as Weller took a pass from Bianchi and buried it into the back of the net to pick up her first goal in navy and gold to make it 2-0. The floodgates really opened after the second goal as MacMillan found the back of the net in the 69th minute with Buck claiming the assist, Weller added her second in the 72nd minute on a penalty kick and Bianchi added her second in the 79th minute. That would be it for the scoring for the game as Concordia cruised down the stretch to claim a big victory.

The Golden Bears will look to carry their momentum back home as they host U-Mary and Minot State this weekend.
