MOORHEAD, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul (13-7, 9-5 NSIC) had its five game winning streak snapped by #7 MSU Moorhead (23-1, 14-1 NSIC) as the host Dragons pushed their streak to 11 straight wins 94-82 on Friday night at Alex Nemzek Hall.
The Golden Bears nearly erased a 21-point deficit late in the first half, cutting it to three with just under eight minutes left in the game. Concordia shot 64.5 percent (20-31) from the floor in the second half while holding the Dragons to 40.7 percent (11-27) second half shooting in the comeback bid that fell short.
Concordia and MSU Moorhead had five lead changes in the first four minutes of the game before the Dragons took off on a 10-0 run. A quick 9-0 charge by Concordia cut the gap back to a point before Jordan Riewer hit three straight three-pointers to push it back to 10 points.
Riewer was on his way to a 28-point first half including eight three-pointers and pushed MSU Moorhead's home record to 11-0 on the year while Concordia's three game road winning streak came to a close.
The Golden Bears will travel to Aberdeen, S.D. for tomorrow's 7 p.m. tip against Northern State (18-3, 12-3 NSIC) at Wachs Arena where Concordia is 0-17 all-time. The Wolves picked up their fifth straight win tonight over #17 Minnesota State in Aberdeen.
Riewer helped the Dragons build a 50-32 lead at the break as he finished the night with 37 points and nine three-pointers in 12 long range attempts. Isaac Sevlie added 23 points and 10 rebounds including 17 second half points for MSUM.
But Concordia closed out the first half with a
Terez VanPelt three-pointer and
Keith Crockett opened the second half with another three-pointer to cut the margin to 15 which would set the tone for how the rest of the night would play out.
Riewer only hit one more three-pointer in the game while Concordia continued to execute on the offensive end.
Five Golden Bears reached double figures in the game led by
Cole Olstad and
Jon Sobaski with 14 points each as Olstad buried four three-pointers while Sobaski added two more. Crockett had 12 points and VanPelt had 10.
Shea Mandli scored all 11 of his points in the second half as he and Olstad led a Concordia bench that outscored the Dragon bench 37-7. Sobaski put up 12 of his 14 in the second half as well as the duo shot 10-13 in the final 20 minutes.
Concordia continued to fight back, with an 18-9 start in the first 7 minutes of the second half to cut it to an 8-point game, 59-51. The run was part of a larger 34-16 stretch of play that started with VanPelt's three at the end of the first half and continued to the 8-minute mark of the second half.
Olstad's steal and feed on the break to Crockett cut the margin to just three points (66-63) with 7:58 to play. On the defensive end,
James Healy rejected Riewer in the lane, but Matt Nelson grabbed the rebound and dished to Tyler Vaughan for a three-pointer to start a 10-0 Dragon run which pushed the margin back to 13, 81-68 with 5:21 left in the game.
Concordia wouldn't get closer than eight the rest of the way as MSUM made 14-of-17 free throws in the last six and a half minutes to keep the score out of reach.
Concordia and MSUM shot nearly identical from the floor on the night, with Concordia shooting 48.3 percent (29-60) to MSUM's 47.5 percent (29-61). Each team was excellent from the arc as Concordia buried 10 against the Dragons' 14 with the biggest difference occurring at the foul line. Concordia made 70.0 percent (14-20) to MSUM's 84.6 percent (22-26).
