VanPelt lifts Golden Bears to first-ever win at Northern State, 66-65 in OT

VanPelt hits game-tying free throws in regulation and scores last four points including GW with 4.0 sec left in OT

ABERDEEN, S.D. - Concordia-St. Paul (14-7, 10-5 NSIC) picked up its first-ever win at Northern State (18-4, 12-4 NSIC) 66-65 in overtime on Saturday night at Wachs Arena. Concordia snaps a 17-game road losing streak to Northern State while also snapping NSU's 5-game overall winning streak and eight game home winning streak, handing the Wolves their second home loss of the year in 13 home games.

Senior guard Terez VanPelt hit the game-winning jumper from just inside the arc and to the right of the top of the of the key with 4.0 seconds left. VanPelt finished with 12 points, five assists and two steals. Junior guard Cole Olstad stole an errant pass at center court and dribbled out the clock for the win.

VanPelt also hit a pair of free throws with 25 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 54 with a Concordia defensive stop on NSU's final possession sending the game to overtime.

Concordia returns home next weekend against Minot State (11-11, 6-10 NSIC) and U-Mary (6-14, 4-12 NSIC) on Friday and Saturday to complete its NSIC North circuit. The Golden Bears are 5-1 against the North on the year after tonight's win.

While Olstad's steal ended the game, it was his hustle on an offensive rebound following a second missed free throw with 15.7 seconds left that allowed the Golden Bears to retain possession trailing by a point, setting up the VanPelt game-winner.

Olstad also knocked down a pair of three-pointers early in the overtime as the Golden Bears and Wolves traded three-pointers on the first few possessions. He finished the night with 10 points and six rebounds, adding three steals.

Concordia was led in the game by redshirt freshman Nuni Omot with 16 points, four rebounds and two steals.

The Golden Bears had 11 steals as senior Keith Crockett added three along with nine points.

Northern State was led by Skye Warwick's 14 points including 4-10 three-point shooting while Tydan Storrusten contributed 13 points. Concordia held NSU scoring leader Seth Bachand to six points on 2-8 shooting and 2-7 free throw shooting.

Northern State came out with the upper hand for a majority of the first half, leading by as many as eight (16-8, 11:38) before Concordia grabbed its first lead of the game at 23-22 with three minutes to play in the half.

After the Wolves went back on top with a three-point play, Terez VanPelt buried a long jumper to tie the game at 25 heading into the break.

The Wolves started the first five minutes of the second half on a 9-2 run to push their lead back to seven and held a steady lead throughout the second half as the defensive battle turned into a physical contest resulting in a number of fouls on each side.

The first half experienced 14 total fouls and seven free throws combined. The second half would see 29 foul calls and 35 free throws between the clubs as the team's attempted to attack the basket with neither team able to get an outside game going.

The result was an inability for either side to gain momentum as the game wore on.

Trailing by eight, 42-34 with 12:29 to play in the game, Concordia went on a 22-12 run as Crockett scored three straight points to claim a 51-48 lead with 1:45 to play. The strong stretch of play spanned nearly 11 full minutes.

Omot scored eight points during the run including the go-ahead three-pointer with 3:32 remaining to give Concordia it's first lead since 23-22 in the first half.

The Wolves quickly turned the tide as Warwick buried a game-tying three-pointer with 1:38 to play and had a 54-52 lead with 37 seconds left. The VanPelt free throws followed to send it to overtime.

In the overtime, NSU's Darin Peterka hit a three-pointer on their first possession with Olstad answering. A Concordia stop was followed by another Olstad three-pointer for a 60-57 Concordia lead with just over three minutes left in overtime.

Spencer Pankonin answered with a three-pointer for the Wolves with just under three minutes to go before Omot put Concordia ahead by a pair on the next possession.

Warwick delivered NSU's third three-pointer of the overtime with 2:08 to play to put the Wolves up by a point, and a minute later a pair of Wolves free throws extended the lead to three, 65-62 with 1:19 to go.

VanPelt hit a pair of free throws with 1:10 to play after getting fouled on a drive to the rim with a strong pump fake getting his defender in the air on the low block.

And he'd also hit the game-winner with four seconds left as Concordia's defense held the Wolves scoreless in between.

Concordia's defense held Northern State to its third lowest shooting total of the year at 36.8 percent (21-57) and still have yet to allow an opponent to shoot 50 percent from the floor in a game.

Concordia shot an even 40 percent in each half and made three of four from the field in the overtime to shoot 42.9 percent (21-49) on the evening.
