Woebke and Suzuki shutouts clinch fourth spot in NSIC Tourney

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Concordia University baseball team (28-12, 20-10 NSIC) swept Sioux Falls (18-31, 12-24 NSIC) with a 6-0 win in game one and a 12-0 win in game two on Sunday as freshman Kevin Woebke and sophomore Yuji Suzuki each threw shutouts.

GAME ONE: Concordia-St. Paul 6, Sioux Falls 0

Woebke (3-2) had perhaps his best outing of his young career as he held the Cougars to three singles and two walks while striking out five. He lowered his ERA to 3.06 on the season in 35.1 innings with 30 strikeouts.

Sioux Falls' only real threat came in the second inning with two hits and a walk but they were unable to bring anyone home.

Woebke faced one over the minimum from that point on as two of the three baserunners were eliminated via the double play.

Offensively, Tyler Krekling proved to be a tough out with four hits in four at-bats and a run scored and Alex LaPorte went 2-3 with an RBI single to pace the Golden Bears. Krekling extended his hitting streak to four games and bumped his average to .276 with his second career four-hit game.

CU opened the scoring in the second inning with a bases loaded fielder's choice for Joe Muench in which the runner from second came around to score on a throwing error by the catcher after the lead runner was retired at the plate.

They added to the lead in the fifth on an RBI single for Ryan Poppitz their brought home Drew Turk. Concordia broke it open with a four-run sixth as Elliot Powell provided a two-run double, LaPorte singled to right to bring a run home and Kyle Dalton brought home another with a fielder's choice.

GAME TWO: Concordia-St. Paul 12, Sioux Falls 0 (7 inn.)

Yuji Suzuki (4-1) picked up right where Woebke left off with a shutout of his own to extended the scoreless inning streak to 15 innings. Suzuki allowed just four hits and a walk while recording five strikeouts. It was his second consecutive start in which he held the opponent to no earned runs to bring his ERA to 3.52.

He received all the run support he needed as the Golden Bears put six runs on the board in the second and four in the third to build an early 10 run lead.

A pair of Cougar errors sandwiched around a Powell two-run single proved to be a big factor in the second. Drew Turk also picked up an RBI in the inning with a suicide squeeze to bring home Alex LaPorte.

Errors hurt USF again in the third as they allowed three more runs to score. LaPorte also drove in a run with a single in the third.

Austin Hebig added an RBI pinch-hit single and Powell drove in his third run of the game with another RBI single in the seventh to bring it to 12-0.

CU collected 10 hits in all in the game, all singles, with Brooks Beilke, Eric Fasnacht and Elliot Powell all delivering multi-hit games.

Beilke finished the game 2-3 with a walk and three runs scored. He finishes the regular season with a .376 batting average, good for second on the team.

Fasnacht went 3-4 to improve his season average to .372 as he scored three runs as well.

Powell, the team's active leader in runs batted in, contributed three more RBI as he went 2-3 with a walk and two runs scored.

The Golden Bears locked up the fourth seed in the NSIC/US Bank Tournament this Wednesday. They will play Winona State at 11 a.m. at SF Stadium.
