SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -
The 10th-seeded Concordia University softball team (20-33) won their second straight elimination game as they knocked off fifth-seeded Minot State (29-20) 5-4 on Friday morning. They advance to face University of Mary on Friday at 2 p.m.

Cassie Bertelsen played the role of hero for the Golden Bears as she went 2-3 with a home run and a double while driving in all five Concordia runs.

Stephanie Kappes (11-20) was solid again before running into a bit of trouble in the seventh, but closed the door to pick up the complete game win. She allowed four runs on six hits and struck out six on the day.

The Beavers grabbed the lead in the first as Darlene Truong homered to center to make it 1-0. They added another in the second on an Alyssa Cornejo single to drive in a run.

Kappes was in control from that point on as she held Minot State to just two hits over the next four innings.

Liz Jarosz and Tessa Ewert gave the Golden Bears their first real threat in the fourth with a pair of singles to lead off the inning. Bertelsen followed by depositing the first pitch she saw over the fence in left to give CU a 3-2 advantage.

With two outs and runners on the corners in the fifth, Bertelsen stepped in again and delivered a two-RBI double down the line to extend the lead to three.

As was the case in yesterday afternoon's game, Concordia had a bit of a scare in the seventh. Alyssa Cornejo lifted a solo homer with one out and Sarah Nicks cut the lead to one with a two-out solo shot. Kappes then stepped up and struck out Truong, who had already homered in the game, to close out the win.

For Concordia, Zepeda had two hits and a steal while Alicia Meiser also had a hit and a steal to round out the offensive effort.

Concordia's afternoon matchup with U-Mary be their second meeting in as many days and fourth of the season. The Marauders have won all three meetings on the year. The winner advances to play tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.
