SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The 10th-seeded Concordia University softball team (20-34) has been eliminated from the NSIC/US Bank Tournament with a 9-4 loss to the seventh-seeded U-Mary (33-21).
The Golden Bears fought back from a 3-0 deficit to take a 4-3 lead in the sixth, but the Marauders answered back with six in the bottom of the inning to pull away.
The Golden Bears fell behind early for the second consecutive game as Allison Brown homered on the first pitch she saw to start the bottom of the first. They added another run in the inning on a Julissa Perales RBI single.
Linzy Heim, who relieved starter
Stephanie Kappes after the lead-off homer, cruised for the next four innings while allowing only an unearned run.
The lone run came on a Kristin Ormsby triple in the fifth in which she came around to score on CU throwing error.
U-Mary starter Melanie Rodriguez scattered three hits through five innings before finally running into some trouble in the sixth.
Trailing 3-0 to open the sixth,
Elena Koncar,
Alicia Meiser and
Teona Zepeda strung together three consecutive singles to load the bases for CU's RBI leader in
Bekah Roth. Roth greeted Cherlyn Trujillo, who entered the game in relief of Rodriguez, with a grand slam to put Concordia up 4-3.
The grand slam for Roth put her number one in the record book for RBI in a season with 53, and she finishes her career fourth all-time with 125 in her career. It was her 19th career home run, ranking sixth in Concordia history.
That lead would be short-lived as a lead-off double followed by a single chased Heim and brought Kappes back in the game. She was unable to find much more success as she hit the first batter, allowed a bases loaded walk and gave up a two-run single and a two-run double before allowing another run came across via an error.
Erin Keen came on to close it out in the seventh as Trujillo (18-10) picked up the win despite giving up the lead.
Heim (9-13) completed five innings of work and gave up three earned runs without recording a walk or a strikeout.
Alicia Meiser and
Bekah Roth each had two hits while
Teona Zepeda,
Kelly McKenzie,
Jamie Fleischhacker and
Elena Koncar each contributed a hit as well.
NOTES:
Meiser concludes the season ranked first in career hitting (.387) and on base percentage (.439) and second in stolen bases (103) ...
Liz Jarosz set the single season record with 30 walks.
