SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Concordia University softball team (19-33) extended their season with a 7-5 win over Sioux Falls (30-17) on Thursday afternoon. They advance to face Minot State Friday morning at 10 a.m.
Senior
Tessa Ewert had a big game at the plate as she went 4-4 with three runs driven in on a three-run home run to help lift the Golden Bears to a win.
Bekah Roth went 2-4 with a two-run homer and an RBI single and
Alicia Meiser went 2-4 with a steal to chip in.
The offenses were quiet through the first three innings with the two teams combining for no runs and just three hits heading into the fourth.
Roth opened the scoring in the fourth with her two-run shot as she drove in
Teona Zepeda. The homer was her sixth of the season and second of the day.
Betsy Thomas launched a solo shot for the Cougars in the fifth to cut the lead in half, but Concordia broke it open with a run in the sixth and four more in the seventh.
Emily Shinn picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly as she drove in pinch-runner
Taylor Linn, but USF escaped further damage in the sixth as Cougar pitcher Bailey Bouman stranded runners on second and third.
She wasn't as lucky in the seventh as Roth collected her 49th RBI of the year with a single and Ewert blasted her fifth homer of the year to extend the lead to 7-1.
The Cougars did make it interesting in the bottom of the inning as they loaded the bases with two outs before Amanda Walters unloaded them with a grand slam. It proved to be too late for USF as Kappes retired the next hitter to end the game.
Stephanie Kappes (10-20) picked up the win as she cruised through the first six innings before running into trouble in the seventh. She allowed five runs on nine hits while striking out five in the complete game.
The Golden Bears will now meet Minot State for the third time this season. The two teams split in St. Paul back on April 14th as the Beavers took game one 6-4 and CU took game two 9-5. The doubleheader marked the first ever meeting in the schools' history.
The winner will advance to play at 2 p.m. on Friday.
