WINONA, Minn. -
Concordia-St. Paul (12-8, 4-6 NSIC) dropped the opening doubleheader of a four game series to Winona State (9-12, 6-3 NSIC), 5-0 and 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at Loughrey Field.

Scheduled to be at home for the first four opponents of the Northern Sun conference season, Concordia has now played those opponents in four different cities spanning three different states. Today's games featured the unique distinction of having Concordia serve as the home team in the box score but counting as away games at WSU's field.

The series concludes with tomorrow's doubleheader scheduled for a noon start at Winona State.

GAME 1: WSU 5, Concordia 0
The Warriors used 10 singles out of 12 hits to manufacture five runs against the Golden Bears. WSU scored in the second inning but left two aboard and left the bases full in the third.

In the fourth, the Warriors finally got to senior right handed starter Adam Kramer for a four run inning to blow the game open. Kramer pitched out of trouble in the inning, stranding runners on second and third.

He took the loss falling to 3-2 as he allowed four earned runs (five total) over 4.0 innings.

Concordia's offense kept up the small ball attack right from the top of the lineup as junior Kyle Dalton dropped down a bunt to WSU pitcher Chase Blazier and beat it out for his fourth bunt hit in the last two games. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and sophomore Ryan Poppitz walked to continue the threat. But the two two were left at first and third to end the threat.

In the second inning, junior Trevon Bargfrede singled with one out but was retired as part of an inning ending double play.

After that, Concordia wouldn't get a baserunner against Blazier until the seventh and final inning. Blazier retired 14 straight batters when junior Tyler Krekling led off the seventh with a hit. After he was retired on a double play, sophomore Eric Fasnacht singled to give Concordia four hits.

Blazier improved to 3-2 with the four hit shutout, striking out two and walking one on just 80 pitches.

Concordia's bullpen featured a pair of freshmen as Josh Lenz worked two shutout frames with four strikeouts and Jake Kounkel worked a scoreless seventh with two more strikeouts.

GAME 2: WSU 4, Concordia 1
The Warriors took the early lead in game two with a pair of hits and a walk in the first inning to get a quick run off sophomore left handed starter Zach Rengel.

While the Warriors continued to show ability to get on base, Rengel settled in and put up zeroes over the next five innings to keep the Golden Bears in the contest. Rengel pitched out of runners in scoring position five times in his six innings of work on the afternoon.

Concordia's bats started as cold as they had been in game one, going down in order the first time through the order.

In the fourth inning, the Golden Bears started something as Dalton led off with an infield single with Krekling drawing a hit by pitch to give the team two on and no outs. After a strikeout, Fasnacht delivered a single to left to load the bases with one out before an inning ending double play induced by the Warriors shut down the threat.

In the sixth, the Golden Bears got another leadoff hit, this time from the bottom of the order as sophomore Alex LaPorte delivered an infield single and moved up on Dalton's sacrifice bunt. Krekling added an infield single to put LaPorte on third. Although LaPorte would be retired at home on a fielder's choice, Fasnacht delivered an RBI single to center to score Krekling to tie the game at one.

Rengel's day ended in a 1-1 tie after six innings. He scattered six hits and two walks while striking out four and holds a 1.20 season ERA in five starts.

Sophomore right hander Yuji Suzuki relieved Rengel and worked a scoreless seventh before running into trouble in the eighth. He left with the bases loaded and one out and one run in as junior Adam Fredericks worked out of the bases loaded jam by getting a flyout on two pitches.

But Concordia went down in order in the seventh and eighth innings when WSU scored two more runs in the ninth to go ahead 4-1.

Concordia looked for a rally similar to its 4-run seventh inning against UMD on Wednesday that sent that contest to extra innings.

A leadoff walk to senior Brooks Beilke started things in the right direction and a one out single to center by Drew Turk put the rally in motion. With two outs, freshman Kevin Woebke delivered a single to left to load the bases, putting the tying run on first and winning run at the plate.

But the rally would stall as WSU closer Scott Freiburger ended the threat for his sixth save. Although Concordia loaded the bases on the Warriors' closer, he has yet to allow an earned run this season.

Will Lundquist got the win for WSU, working 7.0 innings allowing a run on five hits with four strikeouts.

Fasnacht went 2-4 with an RBI to raise his average to .438 while Dalton hit safely in both games and is hitting .463. Both players have hit safely in all but one game this season.
