GAME 2: Concordia 5, WSU 2
After Brekke diced through the Winona State lineup in game one, it was senior right hander
John Hayes doing the damage to WSU's bats in game two.
Hayes started strong, not allowing a runner into scoring position until the fourth inning when he hit his first trouble. The Warriors put runners on second and third with no outs before Hayes induced a grounder, a foul pop and a fly out to left to halt the rally, leaving the Warriors scoreless.
WSU put runners on first and third with two outs in the fifth as Hayes once again worked out of trouble unscathed. He retired the Warriors in order in the sixth and seventh innings to cruise into the game's late innings with a shutout intact.
By then, Concordia's offense had given Hayes breathing room. The teams were scoreless after four innings but it was Concordia that struck first in the fifth.
Redshirt freshman
Doug Vanasek sparked things from the bottom of the lineup with a leadoff single to center and scored on an RBI fielder's choice grounder by Turk. Beilke hit an RBI single to center and Poppitz scored on a wild pitch to give Concordia a 3-0 lead after five innings.
Concordia provided a pair of insurance runs in the seventh when Beilke smashed a two-run double to the opposite field in right center for a 5-0 lead. Beilke went 2-3 with three RBI in game two.
Hayes stayed in for the eighth but this time wouldn't escape trouble. He loaded the bases with no outs to end his afternoon.
Freshman left hander
Kevin Woebke entered in a tough spot and after allowing an RBI single to the hot swinging Tyler Nehring, Woebke struck out Warrior cleanup hitter Travis Evanson and then traded an out for a run with a sacrifice fly. He reloaded the bases by hitting a batter before inducing an inning ending ground out to preserve a 5-2 lead.
He then worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his first career save with two shutout inning and a pair of strikeouts.
Hayes picked up the win, improving to 2-1 in his third start. He's pitched into the eighth inning in back-to-back starts and registered at least 6.0 innings in all three. He scattered seven hits and two walks while throwing 60 of 98 pitches for strikes with a pair of strikeouts.
Mike Wasilik picked up the loss, throwing 6.0 innings being charged with three unearned runs on four hits and three walks to fall to 1-1 for the Warriors.
