Golden Bears and Bulldogs split in Wisconsin

MAUSTON, Wis. - Concordia-St. Paul (12-6, 4-4 NSIC) picked up a split on Wednesday against Minnesota Duluth (5-13, 1-7 NSIC), falling 6-4 in 13 innings of a scheduled 7-inning game before winning 10-2 in the second game that was shortened to 7-innings. The games were played at Woodside Sports Complex after being relocated from Barnes Field.

GAME 1: UMD 6, Concordia 4 (13 innings / 7 scheduled)
The two teams played scoreless baseball over the first four innings as freshman left hander Kevin Woebke traded zeroes with UMD righty Max Ryan.

In the fifth, Woebke ran into his first trouble as he allowed a pair of runs to cross the plate but he stranded runners on second and third to limit the damage.

He allowed two more runs in the seventh after pitching around trouble in the sixth.

Woebke's final line was solid, allowing four runs over 7.0 innings with seven strikeouts and two walks while throwing 64 of 98 pitches for strikes.

But Concordia trailed 4-0 heading into the home half of the seventh.

Senior Brooks Beilke started off with a single followed by a double to left by sophomore Eric Fasnacht and a walk to senior Drew Turk to load the bases with no outs, putting the tying run at the plate and go-ahead run on deck.

A sacrifice fly and a walk scored a run and reloaded the bases as sophomore Alex LaPorte singled home the second run to keep the bases loaded.

A balk by UMD cut the margin to a run with runners on second and third and still one out. Junior Tyler Krekling drove in a run with an RBI ground out to tie the score as the Golden Bears sent the game to extra innings.

In extra's, the bullpens were kings as senior right hander Colton Petron kept the Bulldogs off the scoreboard for 4.0 innings, allowing just one hit. The hit allowed was the first he'd given up all year and he's yet to allow a run in 10.1 innings. He struck out four in the relief appearance.

While Petron was solid over four strong, UMD went to four different relievers to keep the game going. It was Kyle Fritz, a left hander, who would end up with the win after UMD scored a pair of runs in the 13th.

Fritz improved to 1-1 with 2.0 shutout innings while freshman Hunter Lindstrom took the loss to fall to 1-1. Lindstrom worked 1.1 innings and allowed a pair of runs.

Sophomore Ryan Poppitz had Concordia's only two-hit game, going 2-6. Senior Elliot Powell went 1-3 and walked three times.

GAME 2: Concordia 10, UMD 2
Junior Kyle Dalton had three bunt hits to set the tone from the top of the lineup and was also hit by pitch as he went 3-4 with three runs scored

Concordia scored three times in the first and added a run in the third after UMD cut into the three run lead with two runs in the top of the third.

From there, Concordia took off with four in the fourth and two in the fifth.

In the first inning, sophomore Eric Fasnacht delivered the big hit, a triple to left center as part of a string of three straight RBI hits by the newly hot Concordia bats.

Turk added a two run single in the fourth and LaPorte drove in three runs in the game (four on the day). Beilke also had a big day, going 3-3 with two runs and two RBI including a leadoff double in the third.

While the offensive revival was the story of the day after the team had scored seven runs in the previous five games, sophomore right handed starter Yuji Suzuki kept the run of outstanding starting pitching intact.

Suzuki went the distance, allowing two runs on five hits. He struck out four and didn't walk anyone on an efficient 81 pitches (59 strikes). The win was the second of his career.

UMD's only damage came off the bat of reigning NSIC Player of the Year Alex Wojciechowski, a two run home run in the third inning for his first of the year.
