#17 Augustana completes sweep of the Golden Bears

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Concordia University softball team (15-26, 10-11 NSIC) was swept by #17 Augustana (34-8, 17-4 NSIC) on Friday afternoon. The Vikings took the first game 10-3 and the second game 8-1.

GAME ONE: Augustana 10, Concordia-St. Paul 3

The Golden Bears ran were done in by an impressive individual performance for Jenelle Trautmann as she picked up the win in the circle in six innings of work, not allowing a run after the second inning, and hit three home runs and drove in six at the plate. She improved to 22-3 on the year as a pitcher.

CU did strike first in the first half inning with a pair of runs in the first as Alicia Meiser and Teona Zepeda reached base to start the game and eventually came around to score on a Liz Jarosz RBI ground out and an infield single for Stephanie Kappes.

Trautmann gave Augie the lead in the bottom of the first with a three-run shot, but Concordia evened it up again in the second. Emily Shinn got the rally started with a two-out walk before advancing to third on a double for Meiser. Zepeda kept the inning alive as she forced an error on the third baseman, which allowed Shinn to score.

That would be all the Golden Bears could muster as Trautmann shut the door from that point on.

The Vikings took the lead for good in the fourth as Maddie Merriam scored from second on a Golden Bear error to give Augie a 4-3 advantage. They extended it to 5-3 with Trautmann's second homer of the game. Home runs also highlighted a five-sixth inning for Augie as Trautmann launched a two-run blast for her third of the game and Lindsay Spanton followed it up to make it back-to-back homers.

Kappes took the loss as she allowed nine earned runs and struck out four while walking none in her 6.0 innings.

Meiser led the offense as she reached base three out of four at-bats and went 2-4 with a double and a run scored. She also picked up her 25th steal of the year in the game.

GAME TWO: Augustana 8, Concordia-St. Paul 1

The second game started off as a pitcher's duel as the score remained 1-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth.

Augie's Jordan Schaffer opened the scoring in the second with a solo home run and Bekah Roth evened it at one with an RBI double to bring home Zepeda.

The Vikings pulled away with seven runs, two in the fifth and five in the sixth, to put it away. Lindsay Spanton hit an RBI double in the fifth to give Augie the lead before coming around to score on an error. Caitlin Nichol hit a two-run homer and Spanton hit a three-run homer in the sixth to put the game away heading to the seventh.

Kappes (7-17) threw a complete game again in game two as she was tagged with the loss. She allowed only one run on three hits through the first four innings, but ended up giving seven earned runs in the game. She allowed nine hits, walked five and struck out two.

Carley Pickett (11-4) got the start for Augie and held CU to just three hits, two from Bekah Roth, and one run while striking out six and walking five in six innings.

Roth finished the game 2-3 with two doubles and an RBI in what was a tough game offensively for CU.

Their only other hits were a pinch hit double for Frankie Munkwitz in the seventh followed by a single through the left side for Kelly McKenzie. McKenzie replaced Meiser in center in the fourth inning.

Concordia's doubleheader with Wayne State tomorrow has been moved up to 11 a.m. due to predicted inclement weather later in the day.
