WAYNE, Neb. - The Concordia University softball team (15-29-10-14 NSIC) was held to just one run in a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Wayne State (32-12, 18-4 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats claimed the first game 5-1 and the second game 7-0.
Bekah Roth provided a bright spot in the Golden Bear lineup as she went 3-6 with a home run and a double as she was the only Concordia hitter to collect more than one hit on the day. She improved her season average to .385 with a team-best 39 RBI.
GAME ONE: Wayne State 5, Concordia-St. Paul 1
Wayne State gave starter Sara Scheffert all the run support she would need with a run in the first and a run in the secon to take a 2-0 lead. Melanie Alyea provided the run that proved to be the difference with a solo shot to lead off the second inning.
The Golden Bears had their chances as they put runners in scoring position in four straight innings before finally scoring in the sixth.
Liz Jarosz walked and stole second in the second,
Alicia Meiser doubled in the third, Roth doubled to lead off the fifth and
Elena Koncar doubled in the fifth but none of them came around to score.
But before they could break through, WSC added to their lead with another solo homer in the fourth and a pair of RBI singles in the fifth to make it 5-0.
Roth ended the shutout with her third homer of the year in the sixth off of reliever Kelcie Borman. Borman retired the next five hitters in order to finish off the game.
Linzy Heim (8-10) got the start in the circle for CU and allowed five runs on 10 hits in the six-inning complete game.
GAME TWO: Wayne State 7, Concordia-St. Paul 0
The Wildcats took control early in game two as well as Kaiti Williams went deep with two outs in the first and Sam O'Brien delivered an RBI triple to make it 2-0.
Williams homered again in the third to extend the lead to three and Bormann hit a grand slam in the fourth to break it open at 7-0.
The Golden Bears produced their biggest rally in the fourth inning when
Frankie Munkwitz led off with a single. Jamie Fleschhacker replaced her at first with a fielder's choice the next at-bat and
Tessa Ewert moved Fleischhacker to third with her own single. After Koncar struck out, Jarosz loaded the bases with a walk.
Kelly McKenzie was retired on strikes to end the rally and keep CU off the board.
Scheffert (16-8) and Bormann combined for the shutout for WSC as they allowed a combined four hits and three walks and struck out four.
Stephanie Kappes (7-18) picked up the loss as she allowed seven runs and eight hits while walking six and striking out five.
McKenzie singled in the third and Roth singled in the fifth for the Golden Bears other two hits in the game.
