Pitching powers sweep of Golden Eagles

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul (18-8, 10-6 NSIC) picked up a pair of Northern Sun wins on Tuesday afternoon in its home opener at Barnes Field, defeating Minnesota Crookston (1-31, 0-20 NSIC) 3-0 and 16-1 to push the team's winning streak to six games.

While the starting pitchers hurled complete games and allowed only 10 hits and two walks over 14.0 innings, the offense also powered up in game two. Sophomore Ryan Poppitz went 4-7 with a double, home run, four runs and three RBI in the doubleheader. Junior Tyler Krekling went 3-6 with two runs, three RBI and three doubles and sophomore Eric Fasnacht went 4-4 in the second game, scoring three and driving in three runs while also adding a double.

GAME 1: Concordia 3, UMC 0
Freshman left handed starter Kevin Woebke picked up his first win by going the distance for the first time to record the shutout. He scattered six hits and a walk while striking out seven. He only need 85 pitches (60 strikes) to improve to 1-1 while lowering his season ERA to 3.37.

The game was a scoreless tie after four innings, though, as Minnesota Crookston starter Jon Mittag turned in his top outing of the season on the other side. Concordia finally got to him in the fifth as senior Brooks Beilke drove in an RBI single to score junior Kyle Dalton. Dalton had reached with a bunt single to lead off the inning. Two batters later, Krekling delivered his second double of the game off the base of the wall down the left field line to score Beilke and Poppitz. Krekling's other double in the second inning was off the higher part of Wiesy's Wall in left field.

The three run rally was all the rookie Woebke needed in the win.

Poppitz, Beilke and Krekling all had 2-3 games at the plate and Dalton's bunt single was Concordia's only other hit.

Mittag was charged with the loss, falling to 0-5 as he pitched his first complete game of the year, allowing three runs on seven hits and six walks.

GAME 2: Concordia 16, UMC 1
Concordia came out strong in game two with a 5-run first inning, scoring all five runs with two outs on four straight two-out RBI singles after a pair of one-out walks got the rally started.

The Golden Bears put up three more runs in the second starting with Fasnacht's two-run double to the right center field warning track.

In the third inning, Poppitz hit his second home run of the season to left field, a three run blast to cap a 4-run inning following Krekling's third double that also drove in a run.

The three strong offensive innings put Concordia ahead 12-0 in front of senior right handed pitcher John Hayes.

Like Woebke, Hayes cruised on the mound. He allowed only four hits and a walk while striking out four on just 82 pitches (58 strikes). The win improves Hayes to 3-1 while lowering his ERA to 3.86.

Hayes allowed the only run of the day in the third inning on a two-out single up the middle. No one passed first base the rest of the day after the run as Hayes only allowed one hit and two runners reached on error in the last four innings.

Hayes' day ended with back-to-back strikeouts as he struck out three of the last four batters in the game.

Ryan Paasch took the loss for UMC, falling to 0-3 as he worked the first 3.0 innings.

The Golden Bears will head north this weekend to face Bemidji State on Friday and Saturday ahead of Easter Sunday in a four game NSIC series.

Concordia's sweep today moved the team up to fifth in the NSIC standings at 10-6 while BSU was swept at Minnesota State to fall to eighth at 7-7. Entering today, BSU led Concordia by percentage points for sixth. Concordia currently trails Northern State by a game for fourth place.
