BEMIDJI, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul (18-10, 10-8 NSIC) saw its six game winning streak come to a close on Friday afternoon at BSU Baseball Field, falling 2-0 and 13-1 in the first two games of a four game series to Bemidji State (15-14, 9-7 NSIC). The wins for BSU snapped its four game losing streak, as well.
The four game series concludes with a noon doubleheader tomorrow at BSU Baseball Field.
GAME 1: BSU 2, Concordia 0
Bemidji State struck first in the bottom of the first, getting a one-out walk, moving the runner to second on a ground out before BSU slugger Zach Braun knocked in the game's first run with a single to left.
In the third inning, Concordia threatened to tie as sophomore
David Henke led off with a single to center on an 0-2 pitch. He was retired when senior
Elliot Powell grounded into a fielder's choice up the middle. With two outs, junior
Kyle Dalton beat out an infield single to put runners on first and second. Junior
Tyler Krekling delivered a single through the left side on a 1-0 pitch, but Powell was thrown out at the plate to end the threat.
In the third inning, the Beavers put together a pair of two out hits, the second being an RBI double to the left field corner to score Tyler Nelson from first base for his second run.
From there, sophomore right handed starter
Tyler Brekke settled into a groove. He allowed only one baserunner, a two out single in the fourth, the rest of the game and he retired the last seven batters of the game.
Concordia's bats continued to put pressure on BSU with four hits over the last three innings and the Golden Bears left runners on first and third in the sixth inning in its last rally.
Dalton went 2-2 with a walk to raise his average to .442 and five others had hits as well as Concordia had seven hits but left six on base.
Brekke held BSU to just four hits and a walk over 6.0 innings in the complete game loss. BSU only stranded three on base, though. Brekke falls to 2-2 while maintaining his 3.00 ERA. He only needed 82 pitches (52 strikes) in the solid outing.
Tyler Saeugling improved to 3-4 for BSU, working 6.0 innings before leaving after a leadoff single in the seventh. Saeugling only needed 79 pitches and stranded seven hits and a walk with four strikeouts.
Drake Huggans came out of the bullpen and struck out three straight batters with a runner on first to earn his sixth save.
GAME 2: BSU 13, Concordia 1 (7 innings)
It was a hard luck day for sophomore southpaw
Zach Rengel as Bemidji State scored five runs, only one of which was earned, in the first inning. Rengel struck out the first batter he faced before a single to right field. What followed next was a series of tough events for Rengel. Two straight comebackers were followed by an error to plate the first run of the game.
Another error later in the inning with two outs compounded the long first for Rengel.
The Golden Bears wouldn't recover as Rengel took the loss, falling to 4-2. He worked 3.0 innings, allowing a run in each the second and third innings and left charged with seven runs but only three earned.
Offensively, the Concordia bats couldn't heat up, only scoring once on a passed ball in the fourth inning.
Poppitz went 2-3 and scored the only run for Concordia. All six hits for the Golden Bears were singles in the game.
Meanwhile, BSU kept up the offensive output with a 15-hit game against three Concordia pitchers.
Tyler Nelson paced the BSU offense by going 4-4 with five runs scored while Joey Hanowski and Zach Braun each had three hits and two RBI.
Mark Kosmalski picked up the win, improving to 1-2 on the year by going the distance allowing just the one unearned run. He struck out five and walked one.
Right handed reliever
Adam Fredericks went 2.1 innings to finish the game for Concordia, allowing just an unearned run while striking out one with no walks on 47 pitches.
