Softball swept by the Marauders

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia University softball team (12-24, 7-9 NSIC) was swept by the University of Mary (22-16, 7-7 NSIC) on Sunday afternoon. The Marauders took game one 10-1 and game two 4-2 on the cold and windy day.

U-Mary pitcher Cherlyn Trujillo (9-6) allowed just one run on eight hits while striking out 18 in 11.1 innings of work. The reigning NSIC Newcomer of the Year picking up a win and a save in the doubleheader.

Julissa Perales and Kristin Ormsby had big days at the plate as Perales went 4-7 with three home runs and five RBI and Ormsby went 5-8 with two homers, a double and five RBI to lead the Marauder offense on the day.

Jamie Fleischhacker and Teona Zepeda each picked up three hits on the day to pace the Golden Bears.

GAME ONE: U-Mary 10, Concordia-St. Paul 1

The Marauders ambushed CU pitcher Linzy Heim in the first as the first five hitters of the game reached base, including a three run homer for Ormsby, as they took a 4-0 lead.

Concordia got a run back in the third as Alicia Meiser singled and stole a pair of bases before being driven in on a double from Bekah Roth.

Heim settled in as she kept U-Mary off the board until the fifth, but the Marauders added another to their lead on a solo home run for Perales. Omsby added her home run of the game in the sixth, Perales picked up her second in the seventh and Demaree Rodriguez hit a home run in the seventh to help push the lead to 10-1.

Heim (7-9) finished the day with a pair of strikeouts while giving up eight earned runs in the complete game loss.

Trujillo allowed one run on five hits while striking out 13 and walking five in the win.

GAME TWO: U-Mary 4, Concordia-St. Paul 2

U-Mary took the early lead again in game two as Omsby drove in leadoff hitter Allison Brown with a single through the hole to make it 1-0.

A Perales three run homer in the third extended the lead to 4-0 as it looked to be headed to another route, but Golden Bear pitcher Stephanie Kappes shut the door from that point on.

Kappes (5-14) retired 13 of the last 14 hitters after the home run, including the last 10 in row, to end the game. She allowed four runs on six hits with seven strikeouts in the loss.

The Golden Bears got on the board without a hit in the fourth off of reliever Erin Keen as pinch runner Taylor Linn came in to score on a first-and-third play that resulted in Fleischhacker getting caught in a rundown between first and second.

They threatened again in the sixth as they loaded the bases as Zepeda and Tessa Ewert walked and Fleishhacker singled up the middle. Trujillo, the starting pitcher for U-Mary, then re-entered the game in the circle to try to close out the game. Cassie Bertelsen pulled CU within two with a SAC fly to left, but Trujillo retired Elena Koncar on a foul out to end the inning.

Concordia went 1-2-3 in the seventh as the Marauders finished out the sweep.

The Golden Bears are back out at Carlander Field tomorrow at 2 p.m. as Minot State comes to town.
