Golden Bears grind out a split with Minot State

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia University softball team (13-25, 8-10 NSIC) picked up a split with Minot State (24-12, 11-7 NSIC) in Monday afternoon's doubleheader to close out the weekend. The Beavers took the first game 6-4 before the Golden Bears took game two 9-5.

GAME ONE: Minot State 6, Concordia-St. Paul 4

The Golden Bears led for much of the first game before Minot rallied for two in the fifth, two in the sixth and two in the seventh to take a 6-4 win.

CU struck first in the second inning as Tessa Ewert drove a two-out double before Stephanie Kappes singled and Cassie Bertelsen drove Ewert in with a single of her own.

The hit was starting pitcher Kappes' first of the season in her first at-bat. She was equally effective in the early going in the circle through the first four innings as she allowed only three hits and no runs through the first four innings.

Bertelsen picked up her second RBI of the game in the bottom of the fourth with a double to bring in Jamie Fleischhacker and Emily Shinn drove Bertelsen home to extend the lead to 3-0.

Minot State quickly took those two back the next half inning as Jen Dixon went deep and Ali Cygan brought home another run on a double later in the inning.

Liz Jarosz added another run for CU with a single in the bottom of the inning as she drove in Bekah Roth, who led off the inning with a double.

The Beavers were back at it with a pair of sacrifice flies in the sixth to pull the score even at four.

After the Golden Bears went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the sixth, Minot State took the lead for good with a go-ahead, two-run homer for Fournier.

Concordia put two runners on the seventh but were unable to push either across as the Beavers closed out the win.

Kappes (5-15) took the loss while allowing six runs and 10 hits while striking out five.

Bekah Roth and Jamie Fleischhacker both continued to raise their averages with two hits in four at-bats and Bertelsen went 2-3 to lead the CU offense.

GAME TWO: Concordia-St. Paul 9, Minot State 5

Concordia was first to score again in game two as Alicia Meiser doubled down the line to lead off the game and came home on a Teona Zepeda RBI double.

Meiser was forced to leave the game in the second inning after a scary play in which she was hit with a foul ball while in the dugout. She finished the day 2-5 to up her season average to .379.

The Golden Bears broke it open with a five run second inning in which the team sent 11 hitters to the plate. Kelly McKenzie walked, scored and drove in a run with a single in the inning while Teona Zepeda picked up an RBI on a walk and Roth drove in another with a single up the middle. CU chased Minot State starter Jen Dixon after just 1.1 innings of work.

The CU attack was consistent throughout the game as they plated a run in each inning until the sixth.

Trailing 6-0 going into the third, Minot put a run on the board against Linzy Heim on a Cygan RBI single. Roth took it right back with another RBI in the bottom of the inning.

The Beavers cut the six run lead in half in the fourth with a three spot, but Concordia minimized the damage with a unique double play in which the runner at second was forced out and a runner attempting to score from second was thrown out at the plate after a relay to first baseman Liz Jarosz.

Jamie Fleischhacker pushed the gap to four in the bottom of the inning with her first home run on the year on a deep drive into the wind in center.

After a few hits for Minot State in the fifth, Stephanie Kappes came in relief and stemmed the tide.

Kappes picked up the save in 2.2 innings of work while allowing only one run, a solo homer for Jen Dixon to lead off the sixth, and striking out one.

Heim (8-9) picked up the win with three earned runs allowed in 4.1 innings with no walks or strikeouts.

Bekah Roth another big game at the dish as she went 3-5 with a pair of RBI and a run scored. With the 5-9 day, she now has a team-leading 35 RBI to go along with a team-leading .380 average.

Zepeda and Elena Koncar also two-hit games with a walk as Zepeda drove in a pair and Koncar drove in one.

Coach Bob Bartel also announced that the doubleheader schedule for tomorrow at Upper Iowa have been moved to Wednesday due to poor field conditions. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. Visit cugoldenbears.com for any additional schedule updates.
