WEST ST. PAUL, Minn. -
Stephanie Kappes picked up her first career no-hitter in game one as the Concordia Golden Bears softball team (7-17, 2-2 NSIC) picked up a sweep of Minnesota Crookston (2-13, 0-2 NSIC). The Golden Bears blanked the Golden Eagles 22-0 in five innings before taking game two 6-2.
Concordia slugged out 33 hits and had a team batting average of .516 in the two wins while holding UMC to just .182 as a team.
Teona Zepeda led the charge with six hits in eight at-bats with five runs scored while
Liz Jarosz,
Alicia Meiser and
Bekah Roth each collected four hits.
On the basepaths, the Golden Bears continued their impressive run to start the year by going 8-8 in steal attempts. The team is now 56-57 on the season.
GAME ONE: Concordia-St. Paul 22, Minnesota Crookston 0
The Golden Bears were rolling on all cylinders from the start in the first game of the day as they collected at least three runs in each of their five trips to the plate.
CU picked up three in the first, six in the second, three in the third, four in the fourth and six in the fifth to get to the total of 22 runs.
Jarosz had a huge game going 3-4 with two doubles and six RBI with two runs scored in what was a balanced attack with 11 different Golden Bears picking up hits.
Zepeda also went 3-4 with four runs scored,
Bekah Roth went 3-4 with four RBI and three runs scored,
Navarae Honoroff went 3-5 and
Alicia Meiser and
Emily Shinn each picking up two hits as well.
Kappes (4-12) was dominant in the circle, striking out 11 of the 18 batters she faced in the no-hit performance. She retired the first six hitters in order before the leadoff hitter in the third to break up the perfect game. She later issued a walk in the inning and another in the fourth but was never any serious trouble on the day.
GAME TWO: Concordia-St. Paul 6, Minnesota Crookston 2
Concordia continued where they left off in game one with a pair of runs in the top of the first.
The Golden Eagles broke through with their first hit of the day on a two-out single in the first inning, but left the runner stranded.
Elena Koncar added another run in the second on a solo blast to open the inning to make it 3-0.
Meiser helped the Golden Bears add another insurance run in the fourth as she picked up a single and stole a pair of bases before Zepeda drove her in with a single.
Minnesota Crookston finally broke through in the fifth as Ashley Manusos knocked a single to right center to bring in Paige Schaust.
Allison Foley closed the gap to three at 5-2 with a solo homer in the sixth, but Koncar went deep for the second time of the game in the bottom of the inning to push it back to 6-2.
Linzy Heim (3-5) shut the door in the seventh to pick up the complete game win. Heim gave up two runs on eight hits with a walk and four strikeout on the day.
CU is back in action tomorrow morning against Bemidji State at 10 a.m. at the West St. Paul Dome.
