WEST ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia University softball team (9-17, 4-2 NSIC) closed out the weekend with a sweep of Bemidji State (11-9, 0-4 NSIC) as they extended their winning streak to four games. The Golden Bears took game one 6-3 before running away with game two by a score of 14-0 in six innings.
One day after hitting .517 as a team, CU smacked out another 28 hits en route to a .412 average for the day.
Liz Jarosz picked up where she left off yesterday in the RBI department, adding six more RBI to bring her weekend total to 14. The freshman 3-9 with a pair of home runs to improve her season totals to .287, four home runs and 24 RBI.
Bekah Roth continued her recent hot streak by picking up six hits in nine at-bats with a double and triple while driving in three runs. Her season average is now up to .389.
The two Golden Bear pithcers were solid in the circle as they limited the Beavers to just three runs and eight hits while striking out 15 in 14 innings of work on the day.
GAME ONE: Concordia-St. Paul 6, Bemidji State 3
Junior
Stephanie Kappes settled in after a rocky first inning to pick up her third win in as many starts and improve her season record to 5-12. She allowed just three runs on six hits while striking out eight in the win.
Bemidji State took the lead on a solo homer on just the third pitch in the bottom of the first. They tacked on another run on a ground-rule double later in the inning to gain an early 2-0 lead.
The Golden Bears evened the score with single runs in the second and third.
Tessa Ewert drove a one-out double in the second before being brought home on a
Jamie Fleischhacker and Jarosz hit her first homer of the day in the third.
CU broke it open in the sixth as they strung together five hits and four runs to build a 6-2 advantage.
Kelly McKenzie drove in Fleischhacker to bring in the go-ahead run as
Alicia Meiser, Roth and Jarosz each delivered RBI hits as well.
The Beavers got one back in the bottom of the inning with a two-out, solo home run, but Kappes closed it out by retiring the final four hitters of the game for the win.
GAME TWO: Concordia-St. Paul 14, Bemidji State 0 (6 inn.)
Linzy Heim (4-5) nearly matched Kappes' no-hitter from Sunday as she held the Beavers hitless into the fifth while striking out seven. The freshman only allowed three runners to reach base as she gave up singles in the fifth and sixth and walked a hitter in the third.
The Golden Bears got all the offense they would need with a pair of runs in the first and four in the second to go up 6-0.
They added another run in the fifth before putting the game away with seven runs in the sixth to invoke the mercy rule.
Roth led the charge offensively with a 4-5 performance while Meiser, Zepeda, Honoroff and Ewert each picked up a pair of hits.
Concordia heads to the Savage Dome to take on Sioux Falls in a home doubleheader this Thursday at 10 a.m.
