WAYNE, Neb. - Concordia-St. Paul (10-2, 2-0 NSIC) extended its winning streak to five games and started out the Northern Sun season 2-0 with 7-1 and 7-2 wins over U-Mary (5-11, 0-2 NSIC) in the conference season opening doubleheader on Sunday at Hank Overin Field.
It was announced before play that the four game series would be cut in half to just today's doubleheader, cancelling tomorrow's games due to cold and snow forecasts in the area.
Concordia starting pitchers
Adam Kramer and
Zach Rengel each improved to 3-0 in three starts on the season. Junior
Kyle Dalton and sophomore
Eric Fasnacht have each hit safely in every game this season as Dalton extends his hitting streak to 23 games including the last 11 games of 2013.
Senior
Drew Turk also had a big day, going 5-6 at the plate to raise his average to .476 after the second game's 4-4 performance.
GAME 1: Concordia 7, U-Mary 1
Senior right handed pitcher
Adam Kramer (Wausau, Wis.) improved to 3-0 by going 6.0 innings, allowing just one run for the win in his third start of the year.
After allowing a two out run to score in the first inning, Kramer settled into a groove as he allowed just one hit over the next four innings. At one point, Kramer retired eight straight in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
He struck out eight and walked two in the game and pitched out of a first and third jam in the sixth.
Senior right handed relief pitcher
Colton Petron struck out two in a perfect seventh inning out of the bullpen.
Junior
Kyle Dalton extended his hitting streak to 22 games with a first inning double.
Sophomore
Ryan Poppitz clubbed a three-run home run in the second inning to help provide some early inning run support for Kramer as Concordia led 4-1 after two.
GAME 2: Concordia 7, U-Mary 2
Sophomore left handed starter
Zach Rengel pitched 7.0 two-hit, shutout innings and struck out eight in a dominant performance to open his NSIC pitching. He lowered his season ERA to 0.47.
Rengel opened the day in trouble, loading the bases with a hit by pitch and two walks with one out but struck out the next two batters and then went into cruise control.
U-Mary only had one more runner reach second base against Rengel, in the fifth inning. Like Kramer, Rengel also retired eight straight batters during a stretch from the second to fourth inning.
Opponents are hitting just .169 against Rengel through 19.0 innings in three starts in 2014.
The game was scoreless through the first three innings until Dalton led off the fourth inning with a double to extend his hitting streak to 23 games. He doubled twice in the doubleheader and now leads the team with five.
He scored when Fasnacht hit an infield single to keep his season-long hitting streak intact which also gave Concordia the lead.
Concordia added a run in the fifth on a suicide squeeze bunt by
Tyler Krekling, scoring Turk for a 2-0 lead.
In the sixth inning after a leadoff double by Poppitz, redshirt freshman
Joe Muench singled him home and stole second. Muench then scored on an RBI double by Turk for a 4-0 lead entering the late innings.
Concordia opened the game up in the bottom of the seventh starting with an RBI single by Poppitz to give him a team leading 21 RBI on the year in just 12 games. Krekling scored on an errant pickoff attempt of Poppitz at first before Fasnacht knocked in his second run of the game with a single for a three run inning and a 7-0 lead.
The Golden Bears turned to sophomore right hander
Tyler Brekke for the final two innings. He allowed a pair of tough luck runs and struck out a pair in his stint out of the bullpen.
Dalton (2-5), Poppitz (2-5) and Fasnacht (2-4) each had a pair of hits to go with Turk's four-hit day (4-4).
Fasnacht leads the team in hitting at .561 while Dalton is close behind at .520 with Turk at .476.
Concordia is scheduled to face nationally-ranked St. Cloud State in a four game conference series next Saturday and Sunday at home at Barnes Field.
