Golden Bears swept by Wayne St. (Mich.) and Florida Southern

(Box Score 1 - Florida Southern, Box Score 2 - Wayne State (Mich.))

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -
The Concordia University softball team (2-8) dropped a pair of games to #8 Wayne State (Mich.) (19-3) and Florida Southern (15-7) on Friday. The Golden Bears fell 5-3 to WSU and 10-5 FSCS at the Diamondplex.

GAME 1: #8 Wayne State (Mich.) 5, Concordia 3
The Warriors struck first as they brought home a run on an RBI triple in the bottom of the first to go up 1-0.

Concordia answered back with three in the top of the second to pull ahead 3-1. Bekah Roth got the inning started with a leadoff single and looked to be stranded there until Cassie Bertelsen, Navarae Honoroff and Alicia Meiser strung together three straight hits with two outs. Honoroff drove a double to bring in Roth before Meiser plated both Bertelsen and Honoroff with a single.

Wayne State put together a two-out rally of their own to regain the lead at 4-3 in the bottom of the third as an RBI double brought home the first run and an error brought home the other two.

WSU tacked on an insurance run in the fourth to make it 5-3, but Warrior pitcher Lyndsay Butler (9-2) wouldn't need it. She retired the last seven batters of the game and finished with a complete game win while giving up seven hits, three runs and striking out 14.

Stephanie Kappes' (0-6) tough luck continued in the circle as she threw a complete game and allowed seven hits and only two earned runs in the loss.

Meiser finished the game 2-4 with a double and a pair of RBI and Roth added a 2-3 performance with a run scored.

GAME 2: Florida Southern 10, Concordia 5
A pair of big innings for the Mocs sunk an early Golden Bear lead in the second game of the day.

The Golden Bears jumped ahead early with three runs in the bottom of the first as the first five hitters reached base. After Alicia Meiser and Teona Zepeda reached with a pair of hits, Jamie Fleischhacker brought them both home with an RBI single to left. A few batters later with bases loaded, Elena Koncar brought Fleschhacker home on a sac-fly to center. Florida Southern then stranded a pair of runners as Kelly McKenzie popped out to end the inning.

Linzy Heim held that lead at 3-0 for CU heading into the third, but Florida Southern broke out it a big way with a five run inning. The Mocs strung together five hits, a walk and a hit by pitch to hang a five spot on the board. An RBI walk for Lanci and and RBI single for Gonzalez gave FSCS the lead before a Brinkmeier RBI double plated the fifth run.

The two teams matched zeroes into the sixth before another five run inning for the Mocs. FSCS used six hits, a pair of walks and an error to break the game open.

Kappes came on in relief during the inning and finished the game with two innings pitched and one run allowed on three hits and three walks while striking out none.

Teona Zepeda paced the CU offense with a 3-4 day at the plate, while Bekah Roth and Alicia Meiser also chipped in their second multi-hit games of the day.
