Golden Bears open up NSIC play at home this weekend

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team (4-2, 0-0 NSIC) opens up NSIC play this weekend at home as #2 Wayne State (7-0, 1-0 NSIC) and Augustana (6-2, 0-1 NSIC) come to town. Friday's game with the Wildcats tips off at 6 p.m. while Saturday's bout with Augie is set to begin at 4 p.m.

THE MATCH-UPS... Concordia holds a 17-15 record all-time against the Wayne State Wildcats and have dominated the series over the past two seasons.  The Golden Bears have won the last four meetings including both last season.  CU is 10-6 all-time at home against WSC.

The Golden Bears take on Augustana for the 20th time in the series as they hold a 9-10 record. After the Vikings won five of the first six meetings, CU has won eight of the last 13 including a two-game sweep last season.

LAST YEAR AT THE GC vs WSC... CU overwhelmed then-#11 Wayne State in the second half in a 69-50 win.  The Golden Bears outscored the Wildcats 41-18 in the second half as they knocked off WSC for the second time of the year, handing them their first two losses on the season.

Kionda Nicks flirted with a quadruple-double as she had 10 points, 10 boards, eight assists and seven blocks in what was a solid, all-around team effort. Whiting tied a season high with 25 points to go along with 11 rebounds to complete the double-double.  Hansen also finished with a double-double, scoring 12 points and picking up 10 rebounds and six assists.

LAST YEAR AT THE GC vs AUGIE... Jordyn Dudley hit a game-winning three as time expired to give Concordia an 81-79 win in overtime against Augustana

Dudley registered a total of 12 seconds of time on the court for Concordia, but came through when it mattered most.  Concordia came out of a timeout after grabbing a crucial offensive rebound off of a missed free throw from Rachel Hansen with just 1.8 seconds remaining down 79-78 with one shot to win the game.  The final play left Dudley, who entered the game at the timeout, all by herself beyond the arc as she calmly buried the three to lift the Golden Bears past the Vikings and sparked her teammates to mob her in celebration.

Hansen got to the free throw line 13 times, hitting eight, as she led CU with 21 points while also collecting five rebounds and five assists.  Anika Whiting wasn't fas behind with 18 points to go along with eights boards and six assists.  Ameshia Kearney was the third member of the Golden Bears to reach double digits with 18 points and five rebounds while hitting 7-8 from the stripe.

LAST TIME OUT...Concordia-St. Paul closed out their non-conference schedule with a 92-48 win over William Penn on Friday afternoon at the Gangelhoff Center. The Golden Bears held the Statesmen to just 16.2% shooting in the first half and 21.4% in the game in the win.

Ameshia Kearney broke out with a big game as she finished with a season-high 19 points and seven rebounds as she missed just one of her six shots and made all four of her threes. She was also 5-6 from the free throw line in the game. Mishayla Jones put up another full stat line as she provided 13 points on 5-9 shooting to go along with eight rebounds and five assists.

NSIC PRESEASON FAVORITES... The Golden Bears enter the NSIC slate after being picked to win the league in the NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll, receiving 10 first-place votes. The Wildcats were the only other team to receive a first-place vote (6) as they fell just three points behind CU in the poll (216-213). WSC did, however, edge out Concordia in the NSIC South Division Poll as they picked up five first-place votes and 47 points compared to three and 45 points for the Golden Bears.

WHITING NAMED GOOD WORKS NOMINEE... Senior forward Anika Whiting was selected as a nominee for the 2015 Allstate WBCA and NABC Good Works Team on Wednesday morning.
