ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team (5-3, 1-1 NSIC) hits the road for their first NSIC road games as they travel to Winona State (6-1, 2-1 NSIC) and Upper Iowa (3-4, 1-2 NSIC) this weekend.
THE MATCH-UPS... Concordia has gone 28-11 in 39 previous meetings with Winona State heading into the weekend. CU has won 11 of 14 in Winona and have won the last three meetings overall including a sweep of both meetings last season.
The Golden Bears take on Upper Iowa on Saturday in the 20th meeting between the two schools. CU has gone 18-1 against UIU and 8-1 in Fayette in previous meetings. Concordia has won five straight in the series dating back to January 8th, 2012.
LAST YEAR AT McCOWN GYM... Concordia erased a late deficit to defeat the Warriors 65-57 back on January 25th. The Golden Bears' hot shooting and advantage on the glass in the second half helped Concordia erase a five point deficit at the break and come out with their 10th conference win.
Carissa Wolyniec inched closer to the 1,000 point mark as she matched a game high with 17 points as the Golden Bear offense was a balanced attack as all five starters scored at least eight points.Â
Anika Whiting nearly missed a double-double with 12 points and nine boards while
Rachel Hansen scored 11 and picked up four rebounds and four steals.
LAST YEAR AT DORMAN GYM... Concordia saw Upper Iowa erase an 18-point lead before Concordia eventually survived the road upset scare in a 71-65 win at Dorman Gym.
The Golden Bears were led on the night by
Ameshia Kearney with 18 points including 4-of-6 three-point shooting.
Rachel Hansen finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and four assists while playing turnover free in 40 minutes. She made 9-of-11 at the stripe. Whiting had 11 points and seven rebounds despite 2-of-8 shooting from the field.
Hansen and Whiting scored Concordia's final nine points in the last 1:40 of play to propel the visiting Golden Bears. Hansen hit a three-pointer with 1:40 to break a 62-62 tie and a layup with 51 seconds left to break a 65-65 tie. Whiting was 4-of-4 at the line in the last 24 seconds while the defense kept the Peacocks from scoring again.
LAST TIME OUT...Concordia-St. Paul split a weekend series with #2 Wayne State and Augustana at home in their NSIC opener.
On Friday, CU fell to #2 Wayne State 60-57 in a hotly contested game featuring 19 lead changes and eight ties. The Wildcats were led by Jordan Spencer's 19 points and 12 rebounds in a physical, grind-it-out game.
On Saturday, the Golden Bears pulled out a thrilling 78-77 win over Augustana.
Lauren Shifflett gave the Golden Bears the decisive advantage with a tough rebound and a free throw with 10 seconds to play in the game.
Anika Whiting averaged a team-high 16.5 points and 11.0 rebounds as she double-doubled in each game. Whiting was 12-28 (42.9%) from the floor and played 35.0 minutes per game on the weekend.
NSIC RANKS... Concordia has several players ranked near the top of the league in multiple different statistical categories.
Anika Whiting leads the way by ranking fifth in the NSIC in scoring, fifth in rebounding, third in defensive rebounding and sixth in minutes.
Mishayla Jones has jumped on the scene in her sophomore year to rank ninth in assists, seventh in assist/turnover ratio and 10th in defensive rebounding as well as third in minutes. Concordia also features two of the top-10 shot-blockers as
Kionda Nicks ranks first and
Caitlyn Russell ranks ninth.
