ST. PAUL, Minn. – The #10 Concordia University women's basketball team (1-1) hits the road for the first time in the 2014-15 season this weekend as they travel to Michigan Tech (1-0) on Friday and Northern Michigan (2-0) on Sunday. Friday's game is set to tip off at 4 p.m. while Sunday's game will begin at 1 p.m.
The Golden Bears kicked off the regular season last weekend as they hosted the Radisson Hotel Roseville Classic. CU split a pair of games with #24 Pitt State and Fort Hays State.
In Friday's 66-59 against Pitt State it was a tale of two halves as the Golden Bears dominated play in the opening half and the Gorillas took control after the break.
On Saturday, Concordia saw a double digit second half lead disappear but they were able to rebound and claim their first win of the season by a score of 70-68 over Fort Hays State. The Golden Bears were extremely effective inside the arc and on the glass as they outmatched the Tigers.
Anika Whiting was named the Tournament MVP while
Mishayla Jones was also named to the All-Tournament Team.
Whiting averaged a double-double with 14.0 points and 10.5 rebounds per game on the weekend as she hit 10-23 from the floor. She opened the season with a strong 16 point and 16 rebound effort against PSU and added 12 points and five boards in just 23 minutes against FHSU.
After a quiet opener,
Mishayla Jones broke out in a big way on Saturday with a career-high 25 points on seven rebounds for the Golden Bears. She was an efficient 9-11 from the field and 6-6 from the free throw line while adding a pair of assists in the win.
Michigan Tech snuck past Minnesota Duluth in their season opener last Saturday by a score of 59-58.
The Golden Bears have had a tough time with the Huskies in the past as Michigan Tech has won four of the six meeting all-time. CU has dropped the last three meetings including an 83-81 loss last season in St. Paul.
Northern Michigan opened their season last Friday with an 81-73 win in overtime over Minnesota Crookston and followed it up on Saturday with a low-scoring 49-45 win over MSU Moorhead in a defensive battle.
Concordia and Northern Michigan have split the four all-time meetings with the Golden Bears knocking off the Wildcats 75-60 last season.
The Golden Bears return home next Tuesday as they take on Jamestown at 6 p.m.
