ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia University women's soccer team (2-5-1, 2-3-1 NSIC) saw their three-match unbeaten streak snapped in a 2-0 loss to Northern State (4-5, 3-3 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon at Sea Foam Stadium.
The Golden Bears created numerous great scoring chances but were unable to capitalize on what was a cold, windy afternoon in St. Paul. CU doubled up the Wolves in the shot column as they had 20 shots compared to just 10 for NSU. The Wolves did prove to be efficient with their shots as five of their ten shots were on net and two were put in the net while Concordia had six shots on net.
Kay Hernandez broke the scoreless tie in the 14
th minute with a beautifully placed shot against the wind from near the left sideline from about 25 yards out over keeper
Emma Gartner's head into the back of the net off a feed from Anna Bondy.
Despite falling behind 1-0, the Golden Bears dominated the possession game with the wind at their backs in the first half. CU collected 11 shots while NSU had just three and had three on goal while NSU had only the one.
McKenzie Buck nearly had the equalizer just under two minutes later as she fired a hard shot off the crossbar. Less than five minutes later
Jessica Bianchi followed suit with another strong attempt that deflected off the crossbar. Luck didn't seem to be on the side of the Golden Bears as Buck launched another shot off the post in the 31
st minute.
Perhaps Concordia's best scoring opportunity came in the 40
th minute as the Golden Bears put up a flurry of shots from just in front of the net, but NSU keeper Brittany Tietz held them in check.
The wind didn't seem to affect the Golden Bears too much in the second half as they once again came out favorably in possession in their offensive zone. It wouldn't be enough on the scoreboard though as the Wolves extended the lead to 2-0 on a rebound put home by Tessa Lander in the 68
th minute. Andrea Boisner picked up the assist on the goal.
Taryn MacMillan,
Sarah Pieper and Bianchi all added decent scoring opportunities over the final 22 minutes but none of them resulted in goals. Buck and Bianchi each finished with a match-best four shots apiece.
Brittany Tietz was excellent in net for Northern State as she made six saves to finish out her second shutout of the season as she picked up her fourth win.
Emma Gartner wasn't tested too often for the Golden Bears as she picked up three saves in the loss.
Concordia is back in action at Sea Foam Stadium at 1:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon against MSU Moorhead.
