ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia-St. Paul soccer team (4-10-2, 3-8-2 NSIC) closes out the regular season this weekend as they travel to Winona State (13-2-1, 10-2-1 NSIC) on Friday before returning home to take on Upper Iowa (9-5-1, 9-3-1 NSIC) on Sunday.
The Golden Bears are looking to close out the season on a strong note after suffering a handful of heartbreaking losses over the past few weeks with the deciding goal coming in the final minutes of the game. CU opened up last weekend with a 0-0 tie as
Emma Gartner Made six saves to collect her third shutout of the year before falling to Minnesota Duluth 2-1 in dramatic fashion on Sunday. Concordia fell behind 1-0 in the first half before being rewarded for their hard work early in the second half with a
Sam McBain goal to tie it in the 66
th minute. The game appeared to be headed to overtime until Jennifer Smith poked a shot that floated over Gartner's head into the net with just under three minutes to play.
Winona State is coming off a tough weekend of their own with a 1-0 loss to Bemidji State and a scoreless tie with Minnesota Crookston that resulted in them dropping out of the top-25. The relatively high-powered Warriors offense was held in check as they failed to get one past the keeper in either game. On the season, Darian Molter leads the WSU offense with six goals while Shauna Rodman and Meg Riebau have each added four.
Concordia will look to turn around their fortunes in Winona as they have not won in ten previous trips there and are just 1-22-1 against the Warriors overall. The win came back in 2007 in a 1-0 game in St. Paul.
Upper Iowa saw their nine-game winning streak snapped this past weekend as Minnesota Crookston played them to a scoreless draw on Friday before Bemidji State knocked them off 3-2 on Sunday. Aimee Wronski has been a playmaker for the Peacocks with seven goals and seven assists for a team-high 21 points while Madie Edwards lead the team with eight goals along with a pair of assists.
The all-time series with Upper Iowa has been nearly split evenly as UIU has won six meetings and CU has won five. The Golden Bears hold a winning record in the seven matchups in St. Paul as they have gone 4-3.
