DULUTH, Minn. – The Concordia soccer team (4-10-2, 3-8-2 NSIC) fell to Minnesota Duluth (7-9-0, 7-6-0 NSIC) 2-1 on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Bears were sunk once again by a late goal as the Bulldogs scored the game-winner in the 88
th minute.
The tough luck continued for CU as they saw their opponent scored the decisive goal in the closing minutes for the third time in four games and fourth time in the last six.
The shot total ended up 12-6 in favor of UMD as they also held a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal, but it was far closer than that total, especially in the second half.
The Bulldogs came to play in the first half as they controlled play for much of the half. They held Concordia to just one shot (none on goal) while creating six shots of their own.
Emma Gartner turned away the first two shots on net for the Golden Bears until Maureen Stormont scored her record-setting 53
rd career goal for the Bulldogs in the 24th minute. It balanced out from there as Concordia limited UMD for the rest of the half to head into the half trailing 1-0.
Concordia bounced back with a strong effort in the second half and were rewarded with a
Sam McBain goal in the 66
th minute to tie it up. McBain took a feed from
Chelsie Lindsay just outside the six yard box and buried it to pick up her second goal of the season. CU held control for long stretches of the half but it didn't end up being enough as UMD got a fluke goal off a header from Megan Helberg that floated over Gartner's head into the net with just 2:57 to play. CU furiously fought to tie it in the final few minutes but couldn't capitalize as Marissa Rosa finished off the win in net for UMD.
Rosa finished with one save to pick up the win for Minnesota Duluth while Gartner made three saves in the tough luck loss.
Taryn MacMillan and
Rachel Gratz both played strong games for the Golden Bears as MacMillan played a solid two-way game to make an impact on both ends while Gratz anchored the defense.
Concordia will close out the season next weekend as they travel to Winona State on Friday at 7 p.m. before returning home on Sunday against Upper Iowa at 1 p.m.
