ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Concordia University soccer team (4-9-2, 3-7-2 NSIC) played to a scoreless tie against St. Cloud State on Friday night (4-10-1, 3-8-1 NSIC) on Friday night.
Emma Gartner made six saves in the shutout for the Golden Bears.
The two teams created nearly an identical number of chances as both teams put six shots on net with SCSU picking up the slight edge with 17 shots compared to 16 for CU overall.
"It was a good game with both teams creating chances but neither team could turn them into goals," Coach Bellis said about the performance.
The Concordia defense was a bright spot with
Rachel Gratz leading the way in a strong group effort in the shutout.
Sarah Pieper was a catalyst up front with a team-high five shots (one on net) and
Coco Piche played a solid game with a shot on goal in her first extended minutes.
Gartner was excellent in net as she turned away all six shots fired her way in her third shutout of the year but was matched the entire game by Kenzie Hanzlik of SCSU who also made six saves in the 0-0 tie.
The first half was tilted more in the Golden Bears' favor as they collected nine shots with four on goal while St. Cloud State had seven shots and three on goal.
McKenzie Buck and
Anna Augustine each added shots along with Piche's and Pieper's in the frame.
The Huskies turned the tables a bit in the second half as they out-shot CU 7-5 and 2-1 on net.
Alahna Anderson collected the only shot for the Golden Bears as neither team could break the tie, forcing overtime.
The first overtime went by without much for chances but each team got it going a bit more in the final ten minutes. Anderson fired another shot on net in the final period while Gartner also made her sixth save but neither team could break through as the match ended in a draw.
The Golden Bears will look to finish the weekend in the win column on Sunday as they travel to UMD for a 1 p.m. game.
