ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia University soccer team (4-9-1, 3-7-1 NSIC) fell to Wayne State (2-11-1, 1-10 NSIC) by a score of 3-2 on a late goal at Sea Foam Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Wildcats saw a 2-0 lead erased before scoring the game-winner in the 89
th minute.
Concordia showed resilience as they pulled even after falling behind 2-0 in the first half but a header into the back of the net for WSC with just 1:06 to play sunk the comeback effort. The Golden Bears limited the Wildcats to just nine shots and three shots on goal but WSC made the most of those chances as all three shots on goal resulted in goals. CU was on the attack for most of the game as they created 16 shots (six on goal) themselves in the game.
The field was tilted in the Golden Bears' favor for the first 20 minutes as CU held WSC without a shot until Alex Mathers launched a shot over Gartner's head and off the crossbar and into the net to make it 1-0. Wayne State carried the momentum through late in the first half when Suenly Galvez took a pass off a free kick right out in front of the net and buried it to build a 2-0 lead for the Wildcats.
The Golden Bears burst out of the gate in the second half with a spirited effort and it didn't take long for it to pay off.
Sam McBain headed in her second goal of the year off a corner from
Emily Ecklund to cut the lead in half. Just 30 seconds later
Sarah Pieper won a battle for the ball right near the left goal post and slipped it in the back of the net to even it up.
McKenzie Buck and
Jessica Bianchi picked up assists on Pieper's first of the season.
CU appeared poised to take the lead and put the game away but couldn't get much going as WSC rebounded from the slow start to the second half. The two teams battled it out with neither team creating the go-ahead goal until McKenna Adams put the Wildcats on top with a header off a corner from Mallory Hoyt to send the WSC bench into a frenzy. It was too late for CU to respond with just over a minute to go as Wayne State picked up their first conference win of the year.
Despite not scoring a goal,
Taryn MacMillan was active with a game-high six shots.
Sarah Pieper finished with three shots with Bianchi and Wynne added two apiece.
Concordia now heads on the road for three games before returning home for the regular season finale on November 2
