Golden Bears drop a heart-breaker in OT to #22 Augie

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia University soccer team (4-8-1, 4-6-1 NSIC) dropped a hard-fought overtime game at home 2-1 against #22 Augustana (11-2, 9-1 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon. The Vikings scored with just 1:27 to play in the second overtime to claim the win.

The Vikings got off to a fast start as they broke the tie in the seventh minute with Peyton Pry depositing the ball in the back of the open net after receiving a feed behind keeper Emma Gartner from Stephanie Stephens. The goal was Pry's team-leading 10th of the season.

The Golden Bears rebounded from a slow start to create some pressure later on in the half. Perhaps their best chance to score in the half came on a free kick from Shannon Wynne with just over nine minutes to go in the half that just missed the top right corner of the net. Wynne also added another shot on goal as did Anna Augustine in the half.

Overall, Augustana had seven shots (five on goal) compared to five shots (two on goal) for Concordia in the first 45 minutes.

Taryn MacMillan appeared to have tied the game as she picked up a loose ball off a free kick but was offside, negating the goal. Shortly after the Macmillan opportunity, the Vikings had a near miss of their own as Annie Thoreson hit the post on a header off a cross.

The half proved to be a physical, grind-it-out affair with each team creating opportunities but there was nothing to show for it. The Golden Bears held their own as they matched the Vikings shot-for-shot for most of the rest of the half and it appeared to not be enough until Alahna Anderson struck in the 82nd minute.

Anderson picked up a rebound off a Sarah Pieper shot off the crossbar and put it in the back of the net in the ensuing battle for the ball to even the score at one apiece. Concordia kept the pressure up for the remainder of regulation but were unable to capitalize as the game went to overtime.

The Golden Bears out-shot the Augie in the second half by a margin of six to four with each team putting three on net.

Augustana tilted the field in their favor early in the overtime session as they fired a flurry of shots but Gartner was up to the test. She stopped all five shots headed her way in the first overtime.

MacMillan was robbed again in the best scoring chance of the first overtime for CU as she launched a shot from about 25 yards out that beat the Augie keeper but appeared to hit the crossbar. CU picked up the rebound and put it in the back of the net but it was ruled out of play and the goal was disallowed.

The two teams played a mostly uneventful second overtime with neither team getting many chances until the Stephanie Stephens took a feed on the left side of the field from Ellie Westemeyer and rolled it back past Gartner into the right side of the net.

Despite a valiant effort in net with 12 saves, Gartner took the loss for the Golden Bears while Ashley Limmer got the win for Augie.

Concordia finishes off the weekend at 1 p.m. tomorrow with a match against Wayne State.
