BISMARCK, N.D. - The Concordia University soccer team (4-6-1, 3-4-1 NSIC) dropped a tough 1-0 decision in overtime to the University of Mary (3-5-3, 2-4-2 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon. Sabra Bertsch's goal in the 94th minute broke a scoreless tie and gave the Marauders the win.
For the sixth consecutive game the Golden Bears created more shots than their opponent as they finished with 15 shots compared to 12 for U-Mary. The Marauders were more efficient with their attempts, however, as they collected seven shots on net compared to six for CU.
"We had a few golden opportunities to score but couldn't capitalize, but had a pretty solid effort," Coach Bellis said of the match.
The Golden Bears dominated play in the opening half as they more than doubled up U-Mary in the shot category with an 8-3 advantage and a 4-1 advantage on net. Jess Bianchi was active in the half as she fired two shots on net while
Taryn MacMillan and
Shannon Wynne added a shot each as well.
The momentum shifted a bit in the second half as the Marauders created eight shots and five on goal after the break while the Golden Bears had six and two, respectively.
McKenzie Buck just missed putting Concordia on top as she hit the post in the 57th minute. Bianchi also had a great opportunity right out in front of the net but Marauder keeper Shelby Buttron stood up to the challenge.
The Marauders didn't wait long to break the tie in overtime as Bertsch took a throw-in from Mykala Benjamin and put it away from 10 yards out to give U-Mary a 1-0 win.
Buttron played the entire game in net for U-Mary and turned away all six shots the Golden Bears fired her way in the game to pick up the win and the shutout.
Emma Gartner took the tough-luck loss in net for the Golden Bears as she held the Marauders off the board throughout regulation. She finished the game with six saves.
Concordia has another big road match tomorrow as they take on Minot State at 1 p.m.
