Concordia picks up second sweep of the day with 3-0 win over Hillsdale

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia University volleyball team picked up their second win of the day with another 3-0 sweep over the Hillsdale College Chargers.  The Golden Bears won by scores of 25-16, 25-12, 25-16.  Concordia improved to 2-0 while Hillsdale fell to 0-2.  This was the second consecutive year facing Hillsdale in the tournament, with last year's match also finishing in a sweep.

The two teams battled for much of the first set, going back and forth with the Chargers tying the score at 11.  The score remained close at 15-14 before the Golden Bears finished on a 10-2 run to take the set 25-16.

The second game also started off tight with Concordia trailing 5-4 early.  The Golden Bears rattled off three straight points and didn't let go of the lead the rest of the set, winning 25-12.

CU led from wire to wire in the third game and used a 7-0 run to extend a 16-13 lead to 23-13.  Concordia would finish off the match with a 25-16 win.
The Golden Bears had five players with at least nine kills, led by 11 from freshman Riley Hanson (Nevis, Minn.)   Hanson finished the day with 23 kills on 36 attempts with only one error for a .611 attack percentage in the two matches.  Heather Schiller (Coon Rapids, Minn.) had 10 kills on 18 attempts with no errors, finishing with a .607 attack percentage.  Kara Pioske (Waconia, Minn. ) had 10 kills and 13 digs to finish the match with a double-double and Emily McDonough (Stillwater, Minn. ) chipped in ten kills of her own.  Kayla Koenecke (Delano, Minn. ) nearly missed a double-double with nine kills and 14 digs.  Sophomore Kasey Williams (Cross Plains, Wis.) surpassed the 40+ assist mark for the second straight match, finishing with 42, six digs and five block assists.

Emily Wolfert had 12 kills and hit .579 on the night for the Chargers.

The Concordia Golden Bears return to the court at 11 a.m. with a match with NSIC foe #20 Wayne State (2-0) and also at 7:30 p.m. against #9 Indianapolis (0-2).  CU concludes tournament play on Sunday at 1 p.m. against #21 Wingate (2-0).
