Golden Bear soccer picks up 3-1 win over Lady Bison

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia Golden Bears women's soccer team (1-3) picked up their first win of the season on Monday afternoon in a 3-1 victory over the Oklahoma Baptist Lady Bison (2-2) at Sea Foam Stadium.  After being held scoreless in their first three matches of the year, Concordia's offense erupted for three goals in the win, led by two in the first half for McKenzie Buck (Hudson, Wis.).

It didn't take long for the Golden Bears to break the scoreless streak as McKenzie Buck took a through ball from Alahna Anderson (White Bear Lake, Minn.) that snuck behind the Lady Bison defense and rolled it past goalkeeper Lauren Dobratz into the open net just under seven minutes into the match.  CU kept the pressure on after the first goal and was able to capitalize on another opportunity in the 27th minute as Buck once again slipped behind the defense on another through ball, this time from Taryn MacMillan (Eagan, Minn.)  and put it past the keeper to put the Golden Bears up 2-0 on her second goal of the afternoon.  Oklahoma Baptist was held without a shot on net in the first half.

The tide would turn a bit in the second half as play moved more into the offensive zone for the Lady Bison early in the second.  Just five minutes into the second half the Lady Bison cut the lead in half on a Zoe Bauerschmidt goal.  Bauerschmidt was able to get all alone in front of Kayla Kuczaboski (Vadnais Heights, Minn. ) and put it home to make it 2-1.  Intensity of play picked up after the goal and both teams battled to pick up the next marker.  Concordia's defense did a nice job protecting Kuczaboski in net, only allowing two of Oklahoma Baptist's 16 shots to be on goal.  The Golden Bears picked up a big insurance goal on a beautiful effort from Erica Landry (Mukwonago, Wis.)   Landry took the ball from about 20 yards out from the left of the net and buried it in the upper right corner to regain a two goal lead for CU at 3-1.

Despite not getting in the scorebook, junior Emily Ecklund (Elk River, Minn. ) played a strong game for the Golden Bears.  She was composed with the ball and was aggressive on offense, putting four shots towards the net.  For Buck, she was active on the offensive end and put pressure on the defense and was rewarded with her first career multi goal game. For Landry, a freshman, it was her first goal in a Golden Bear uniform.

CU hits the road for a pair of conference matches over the weekend with Minnesota Crookston (2-2) on Saturday and Bemidji State (4-0) on Sunday.  Concordia had won four straight over Minnesota Crookston and has won 10 of 15 all-time.  The Golden Bears won 2-1 in their last trip to Bemidji but are just 1-5 against the Beavers at their home field overall.
