Concordia falls 1-0 to Minnesota State on Thursday night

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia University women's soccer team (0-3-0) dropped its conference and home opener to the #4 Minnesota State Mavericks (3-0-0) 1-0 on Thursday night at Sea Foam Stadium.  Concordia remains winless in its ten meetings all-time against Minnesota State.  Korey Kronforst picked up the game's only goal for the Mavericks.

It didn't take long for MSU to get on the board as Korey Kronforst put home a rebound from a Courtney Vallarelli shot just 2:28 into the game.  The Golden Bears settled in after that and took much of the action to their offensive zone for the rest of the half.  Concordia put up eight shots to Minnesota State's seven in the first half, putting five on goal compared to four for MSU.

Maverick goalkeeper Molly McGough made some solid saves in the first 45 minutes to keep the Golden Bears off the scoreboard.  Perhaps the most impressive one came on a shot from Liz Darkow from about 20 yards out that she had to jump and deflect to keep the score at 1-0.

The second half proved to be less eventful for McGough as Minnesota State controlled the ball for much of the second half.  The Mavericks turned the pressure up by attempting 13 shots (five on goal) in the half and didn't allow any shots from CU.

Sophomore keeper Emma Gartner (Springdale, Ark.) stood her ground making several solid plays to keep it a one goal game.  She finished the night with eight saves on nine shots on goal.  Jess Bianchi (Rogers, Minn.) was active for CU, putting three shots on net in the match.

Concordia is back at Sea Foam Stadium this Monday, September 16th, for a nonconference match with Oklahoma Baptist (1-1-0) at 4:00 p.m.
