Concordia uses snow to keep Dragons cold

ST. PAUL, Minn. - While Concordia-St. Paul (21-7, 8-2 NSIC) remains scorching hot, the Golden Bears kept their opponent cold thanks to the winter-like conditions in a sweep of MSU Moorhead (2-23, 0-10) on Friday afternoon at Oxford Recreation Field. Concordia won by scores of 12-6 and 8-2 in the doubleheader sweep.

GAME 1: Concordia 12, MSU Moorhead 6
Temperature at game time of the first contest was in the mid 40's before dropping into the 30's by the middle innings and finishing with steady snowfall which caused a longer than usual delay in between the games.

The Golden Bears started strong with a three run first inning starting with the first career home run off the bat off sophomore Alicia Meiser (Circle Pines, Minn.). She would also walk and steal in the second inning, with freshman Lindsey Kamleiter (Lakeville, Minn.) scoring from third on an errant throw to second on her steal.

In the third, Concordia's offense continued to put the pressure on the Dragons with three straight hits to start the inning as senior Brynn Larsen's (Oconto Falls, Wis.) double to right center allowed junior Bekah Roth (Shoreview, Minn.) to drive in Missie Feuerbach (Iowa City, Iowa) from third, and Cassie Bertelsen (Oakdale, Minn.) added a sacifice fly as well. Kamleiter would drill a ground rule double to right to score Roth for Concordia's second three-run inning of the game and a 7-0 lead after three.

M.Feuerbach added her first of four doubles in the doubleheader to drove in freshman Teona Zepeda (Woodbury, Minn.) in the fourth inning as Concordia was three outs away from an 8-0 win in shortened fashion. M.Feuerbach was 5-7 with four RBI in the doubleheader and went 3-4 in the game.

Senior right hander Ashley Kluever (Cottage Grove, Minn.) was aiming at her ninth shutout in an 11-start span, and struck out the first batter of the fifth inning to turn it over to the top of the MSUM lineup. The Dragons picked up a pair of singles around a walk to load the bases for cleanup hitter Amanda Moore, who slugged a grand slam on a 1-0 pitch away to the opposite field in right.

Kluever finished the inning and would end up picking up the victory after allowing two more runs in the sixth inning. She went five innings, allowing five runs with six strikeouts to improve to 12-5.

She was relieved by sophomore Stephanie Kappes (Circle Pines, Minn.) who retired five of the six batters she faced in 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing a one-out double in the seventh inning. She picked up her first save of the year.

Roth went 3-4, adding her third home run of the year, a three run shot in the sixth inning in a four-run frame for Concordia. She had four RBI in the game and five on the day and is now second on the team with 20 on the year while tying Larsen for the team lead in homers.

GAME 2: Concordia 8, MSU Moorhead 2
Concordia had a strong start to game two as well, scoring a run with a two-out rally in the first on an RBI double from M.Feuerbach, scoring freshman Jamie Fleischhacker (Maplewood, Minn.) who reached via a two-out walk.

MSU Moorhead tied the game in the second as Moore clubbed a leadoff homer to left, her second of the game and third of the year.

Concordia added a run in the third as Roth picked up an RBI ground out to reclaim the lead, 2-1. In the fourth, Concordia added another run on an RBI infield single by Fleischhacker in a close 3-1 game.

With Kappes cruising in the circle, the offense ignited the Dragons in the fifth for a five run inning that included three ground rule doubles as part of four-straight hits. Meiser's ground rule double to right scored two, followed by an RBI single to left by freshman Zepeda and back-to-back ground rule doubles to left by Fleischhacker and M.Feuerbach each scored a run as well.

The Dragons added another solo homer in the sixth inning, but Kappes was able to finish off MSUM for the win.

Kappes went the distance, pitching seven innings and allowing two runs on five hits with eight strikeouts. She improved to 9-2 and dropped her ERA to 2.61 while picking up a win and a save in the doubleheader.

Zepeda, Fleischhacker and M.Feuerbach all went 2-3 in the second game. Meiser was 1-4 and stole another base, giving her 28 on the season in 30 tries. Kamleiter also had a two hit day, going 2-4.

With the wins, Concordia is now 19-3 over the last 22 games. They'll play Northern State tomorrow at noon at Oxford Recreation Field, with Sunday a possibility in the event of poor weather.
