MINNEAPOLIS - Concordia-St. Paul (5-5) took the field at the crack of dawn at the Metrodome this morning, starting the first game of a doubleheader at 7 a.m against Missouri S&T (0-7). The Golden Bears allowed just one run each game to pick up a sweep of the Miners, winning the first game 5-1 before a late rally in game two for a 2-1 win.
GAME 1: Concordia 5, Missouri S&T 1
The Golden Bears took the first game of the doubleheader 5-1 over the Miners. The win went to junior right hander
Adam Kramer (Wausau, Wis.), his first of the year. Kramer surrendered just one hit over 6.0 innings, allowing one run with two walks and three strikeouts.
After a hitless first inning the Golden Bears got on the scoreboard in the second inning.
Elliot Powell (Minnetonka, Minn.) doubled to deep right field sending
Mick Sawinski (St. Louis Park, Minn.) to third after he had singled earlier in the inning. Things got interesting as a ground ball to a drawn in third baseman looked to be an out at the plate but Sawinski was able to get into a rundown forcing a bad throw to third base by the Miners catcher skipping off the turf into left field where it was then misplayed by the left fielder rolling past him toward the wall. A fielder's choice turned into two runs on two Miner errors with
Paul Giel III (Minnetonka, Minn.) standing on third.
Jared Kramer (Wausau, Wis.) followed with a blooper to right field to bring in the third run of the inning giving the Bears a 3-0 lead in the second inning.
A.Kramer, starting his second game of the season, worked out of a jam in the bottom of the second inning. A leadoff hit was followed by a four-pitch walk and a sacrifice bunt putting runners on second and third with one out. Kramer was able to get a pop-up and a ground out to end the inning without any damage.
A.Kramer surrendered his first hit and his first run in the bottom of the third as a run scored on a wild pitch, which Kramer's brother and battery mate, J.Kramer was unable to keep close to the plate. After three innings the Golden Bears led 3-1.
Both pitchers settled down as Kramer sailed through the next three innings, not allowing a hit and the Golden Bears were only able to muster two hits off the Miners' Thomas Laudadio through 6.0 innings.
The Golden Bears got some insurance in the top of the seventh inning as
Kyle Dalton (Minnetonka, Minn.) tripled down the right field line scoring
Ryan Poppitz (Plymouth, Minn.) after he was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning. After a Larpenter walk; head coach
Mark “Lunch” McKenzie put on a delayed steal to second trying to draw a bad throw to steal a run from third. The play worked to perfection as the catcher threw the ball into center field for his second error of the game, scoring Dalton from third.
Kramer's day was complete after six very solid innings.
Griff Kilber (Chanhassen, Minn.) came in to close things out for the Golden Bears in a non-save situation pitching a scoreless inning allowing two hits and striking out one.
Dalton was the offensive leader in game 1, going 2-4 with a triple, an RBI and a stolen base.
Game 2: Concordia 2, Missouri S&T 1
The Golden Bears took game two in dramatic fashion, sweeping the doubleheader with a 2-1 win over Missouri S&T. The Golden Bears scored both of their runs in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run single to center by
Greg Larpenter (Urbandale, Iowa) with one out.
Andy Fagely (Mahtomedi, Minn.) earned his first win on the season with a complete game victory, recording six strikeouts.
Fagely was making his third start of the season, entering the game with a 3.97 ERA and two no decisions.
Fagely ran into a first jam in the second inning as the Miners put together three straight bunt singles to load the bases with no outs. Fagely struck out the next batter looking, and then had a ball was hit right back to the mound and instead of going home Fagely tried to turn a double play by throwing to second but the throw was low and the shortstop,
Eric Fasnacht (Eden Prairie, Minn.) was unable to handle it, resulting in an error on Fagely, scoring a run. The very next pitch was grounded right back to Fagely again and this time he turned and fired a perfect throw to second base resulting in an inning-ending double play.
The Golden Bears had a threat brewing in the bottom of the second as Sawinski started the inning with a single and after a fly out by Powell,
David Henke (New Berlin, Wis.) sent a sharp line drive to left centerfield and the ball was trapped by the centerfielder on his dive attempt. Sawinski was caught too far off second base and tagged out as the centerfielder threw behind him.
Trevon Bargfrede (Jackson, Minn.) struck out to end the Golden Bear threat. At the end of two, the Miners led 1-0.
Fagely made quick work of the Miners in the third, fourth and fifth innings as he sent them down in order in all three innings, recording four strikeouts in those three innings. The Golden Bears continued to be unable to figure out the Miners' John Auble as he made quick work of the Bears, matching Fagely with three 1-2-3 innings in the third, fourth and fifth as well.
The game went 3.1 innings without a base runner reaching base on either side.
The Miners Michael Lockett ended Fagely's streak of 11-straight sent down with a single to left with one out in the sixth but the very next pitch was grounded to first as Powell made a nice play turning a 3-6-1 double play to end the inning.
T.J. Obermeyer (Sergeant Bluff, Iowa) broke up Auble's string of 10-straight sent down with a walk to lead-off the bottom of the sixth. Fasnacht was then hit by a pitch to form a threat with runners on first and second with no outs. A wild pitch moved the runners up to second and third but a chopper to second resulted in pinch runner
Alex Eernisse (Plymouth, Minn.) being cut-down at the plate for the first out of the inning. Concordia's third hitter, Larpenter, fouled off multiple two strike pitches before lacing a single to center scoring two runs giving the Golden Bears a 2-1 lead.
Fagely took the mound in the seventh looking for the sixth complete game of his career and first of the season. The Miners went down in order in the seventh, as Fagely went the distance.
With the win the Golden Bears earned the sweep of the doubleheader and their fifth win of the season. Fagely's final line was 7.0 innings, one run on five hits, no walks and six strikeouts.
The Golden Bears are back in action on Saturday March 16th at the Metrodome against Winona State. The doubleheader will have a start time of 5:15 p.m. with the second game starting at approximately 7:15.
