SAVAGE, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul (16-6, 3-1 NSIC) picked up a
7-0 game one victory before a
7-2 win in game two over Bemidji State (7-14, 1-3 NSIC) on Friday at Savage Sports Center. Concordia pitchers
Ashley Kluever and
Stephanie Kappes combined to record 29 strikeouts in the sweep, each posting career-highs.
GAME 1: Concordia 7, Bemidji State 0
Senior right hander
Ashley Kluever (Cottage Grove, Minn.) threw her sixth shutout of the season while striking out a career-high 15 in limiting Bemidji State to just a pair of singles. Kluever's ERA improved to 2.30 while she moves to 9-4 on the year. Only one runner reached scoring position, a BSU rally with runners on first and third in the third inning before Kluever registered a strikeout to prevent a run.
Her previous career-high was 12 strikeouts, which she had done three times before. The two-hitter was her third of the season.
The Golden Bears put up two runs in the second and third innings to take a 4-0 lead before senior
Missie Feuerbach (Iowa City, Iowa) hit a rocket to left center to lead off a three-run fifth inning. M.Feuerbach went 3-3 with two runs and two RBI. The home run was her second of the year, and she also added her fifth double.
Senior
Brynn Larsen (Oconto Falls, Wis.) was 2-2, lifting her average to .431 on the year with her fourth double. She scored twice and drove in a run. Freshman
Kelly McKenzie went 1-1 with a pair of walks and a pair of RBI.
GAME 2: Concordia 7, Bemidji State 2
Sophomore right hander
Stephanie Kappes (Circle Pines, Minn.) struck out 14 batters while going the distance to improve to 7-2 on the year. Her previous career-high for strikeouts in a game was nine. She allowed a two-run home run in the first inning before blanking the Beavers for the rest of the game.
After BSU took the 2-0 lead to start the game, Concordia responded with three runs in the bottom of the first to claim the lead.
Concordia added two runs in the third, and a run each in the fourth and fifth innings.
Kappes allowed six hits and four walks in the game, improving her ERA to 2.78 on the season.
Larsen was solid once again, going 3-3 with a double, triple, two RBI and two runs in game two.
Alicia Meiser (Circle Pines, Minn.) went 1-2 with two runs and stole a pair of bases out of the leadoff spot, giving her 22 steals on the year.
In the two games, Larsen went 5-5 and is now hitting .459 on the year. Three of her five hits went for extra bases as well, with two doubles and a triple.
Concordia continues NSIC play at the Savage Sports Center on Saturday morning with a doubleheader against Minnesota Crookston at 7 a.m.
