Concordia stays hot with sweep of Golden Eagles

SAVAGE, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul (18-6, 5-1 NSIC) picked up a pair of NSIC wins in shortened fashion on Saturday morning, defeating Minnesota Crookston (2-15, 1-5) by scores of 9-0 and 10-2 at Savage Sports Center. Concordia has now won five straight and 14 of 15.

GAME 1: Concordia 9, UM Crookston 0 (5 innings)
Senior right handed pitcher Ashley Kluever (Cottage Grove, Minn.) tossed her eighth shutout of the season, a one-hitter as she carried a perfect game into the fifth inning. She allowed a one out single to left field with a full count in a seven pitch at bat as the only damage all morning. She struck out nine over five shutout innings to improve to 10-4 with a season-low 2.15 ERA.

Offensively, Concordia delivered 12 hits including freshman Lindsey Kamleiter's (Lakeville, Minn.) solo home run in the in the fourth inning. Alicia Meiser (Circle Pines, Minn.), Jamie Fleischhacker (Maplewood, Minn.) and Bekah Roth (Shoreview, Minn.) all had two hits. Meiser added her 23rd stolen base while Brynn Larsen (Oconto Falls, Wis.) stayed hot with her sixth double going 1-2.

GAME 2: Concordia 10, UM Crookston 2 (5 innings)
Freshman Teona Zepeda (Woodbury, Minn.) went 4-4, stole her third base, scored twice and hit her first career double to lead the Golden Bear offensive attack to a 15-hit morning.

Larsen went 2-2 with four RBI, lifting her average to a scorching .477. She also delivered her seventh double. She leads the team with seven doubles, three home runs, a .754 slugging percentage and 20 RBI on the year.

The bottom of the lineup was also productive as Cassie Bertelsen (Oakdale, Minn.) and Abby Foster (Waverly, Iowa) slugged solo homers.

Stephanie Kappes (Circle Pines, Minn.) improved to 7-2 with the complete game victory. In her five innings of work, she allowed two runs (one earned) and struck out five while lowering her ERA to 2.68.

Concordia returns to Northern Sun action on Tuesday, April 2 with a doubleheader at Sioux Falls at 2 p.m. Next weekend, April 6-7, Concordia is scheduled to open the year at home against MSU Moorhead and Northern State on Saturday and Sunday at Carlander Field.
