Whiting and Hansen lead CU past Minnesota Crookston

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia women's basketball team (16-5, 14-3 NSIC) continued their winning ways on Friday, defeating Minnesota Crookston (7-14, 4-13 NSIC) 69-44 to pick up their eight consecutive victory and 14th in their last 15 games.  With the win, the Golden Bears remain at the top of the NSIC standings.

After Crookston took an early 4-3 lead, sophomore Anika Whiting (Ashland, Wis.) hit a three at the 15:37 mark to give the Golden Bears a lead they would not relinquish.  Whiting added her sixth double-double of the year and second-straight for Concordia with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Rachel Hansen (Eagan, Minn.) led the point with 16 points, seven assists and six rebounds, adding two steals.
The Golden Bears came out firing from beyond the arc, hitting six threes in the first 10:15 to take a 15 point lead at 26-11.  The two teams traded buckets for much of the rest of the half while the lead sat between 10 and 15 until back-to-back threes for the Golden Eagles with just under two minutes left in the half cut the CU lead to single digits at 29-21.  An Amanda Barton (Waterville, Minn.) jumper with 0:39 left in the half brought it back to double digits at 31-21 going into the intermission.

Barton led the Golden Bears in scoring in the first half with nine points on an efficient 4-of-5 from the field.  Whiting chipped in seven points and six boards as CU shot 34.4% from the field in the half.

Christine Thorn came off the bench to hit two threes and lead the way with six points for UMC.  The Golden Eagles as a whole were held to 26.5% shooting and turned it over eight times in the half.

Concordia continued to hold a comfortable lead for much of the second half, keeping UM, Crookston from making any runs to get back in the game.  The Bears worked to get leading scorer Anika Whiting more involved in the offense as she took eight shots and got to the line three times after the break.  CU ran the lead out to 20 on a layup from Whiting, making it 58-38 with 6:57 left in the game.  The lead reached its peak at 69-44 on a Mandy Poke (Richfield, Minn.) layup with 2:06 remaining, which proved to be the final score. Poke added seven rebounds and three assists in 21 minutes off the bench.

Concordia shot 36.7% as a team while holding UMC to 31.1% from the field.  The Bears took care of business on the glass, grabbing 50 boards compared to the Golden Eagles 35.  The Golden Bears were also active on the defensive end by forcing 20 turnovers.

Amanda Barton was a solid option off the bench, scoring 13 points on 5-7 shooting and grabbing five rebounds.

No Golden Eagle managed to get into double figures scoring, as Thorn and Erica McRoberts each had nine.

The first-place Bears are back in action tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m. in the Gangelhoff Center as they take on the Bemidji State Beavers (9-12, 5-12 NSIC).
