Solid defense gives Golden Bears ninth straight win

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Concordia Golden Bears women's basketball team (17-5, 15-3 NSIC) extended its winning streak to nine games with a 76-57 win over the Bemidji State Beavers (9-13, 5-13 NSIC).  The Golden Bears have now won 14 of their last 15 and remain alone atop the NSIC standings.

The Beavers controlled play early on, jumping out to a five point lead at 11-6 at the 16:06 mark on a Lanae Rash layup.  With the Beavers holding a 15-10 advantage a few minutes later, the Golden Bears responded with an 8-0 run capped off with three-pointers from Amanda Barton (Waterville, Minn.) and Mandy Poke (Richfield, Minn. ) to give CU their first lead of the game at 18-15.  Bemidji State answered back with a 9-0 run of three three-pointers of their own to take their biggest lead of the game at 24-18 with 9:17 left in the half.  After a Carissa Wolyniec (Minneapolis, Minn. ) three and a pair of free throws by BSU to make it 26-21, Concordia turned up the defense to spark a 16-4 run to take a 37-30 lead with just under a minute left in the half.  Bemidji State hit a couple of free throws at the end of the half making it 37-32 going into the break.

Rachel Hansen (Eagan, Minn. ) and freshman Kionda Nicks (St. Paul, Minn.) both put in eight points for CU to lead them in scoring in the half, while the team connected on 14 of their 31 shots (45.2%).

Bemidji State looked to run their offense through the post in the first 20 minutes with Jessie Althoff scoring seven points and Kate Warmack scoring six.  The Beavers shot 32.3% as a team in the first.

The Beavers made a push to regain the lead in the opening minutes of second half, cutting it to one at 41-40, but were unable to get over the hump as the Bears bounced back with a 13-0 run that lasted over five and a half minutes and put the game away.  Bemidji State was unable to get into much of a rhythm and spent much of the rest of the half in foul trouble, sending CU to the line 19 times in the half.  Concordia eventually pushed the lead out to 23 points at 72-49 with 4:10 left before sending in the reserves.

The Golden Bears got to the line 25 times and hit on 21 of them to shoot a solid 84.0%.  They crashed the glass hard in the second half, grabbing 26 boards compared to BSU's 19, bringing the game totals 44-41 in favor of CU.  The Bears were once again stifling on the defensive end, holding the Beavers to 22.6% shooting in the second half and 27.4% for the game.  It's the seventh game in the last eight they have held their opponent under 33.0% and fifth in that time they have held them under 30.0%.

Rachel Hansen tied a career-high with 23 points on 6-11 from the field and a perfect 11-11 from the line while also adding five rebounds.  Anika Whiting (Ashland, Wis. ) was a rebound short of a double-double, finishing with 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting and nine boards.  Kionda Nicks had a productive night with 10 points, three boards, three assists and two steals in just 16 minutes of play.

Kate Warmack scored 11 points for BSU and was their only player in double digits.  Jessie Althoff and Morgan Lee each had nine.

The Golden Bears leave St. Paul this weekend for their final two regular season road games at Winona State and Upper Iowa for a pair of NSIC South Division games.  CU holds a one game lead over Minnesota State in the NSIC as they look seek their fifth NSIC regular season title.
