Two big innings cost Golden Bears in losses to Augustana

MINNEAPOLIS - Concordia-St. Paul (1-3) dropped a pair of games 7-2 and 6-2 to Augustana (8-5) on Sunday evening at the Metrodome. Concordia allowed six runs in the sixth inning of the first game; and allowed six runs in the first inning of the second game in the losses. Concordia stranded 22 runners on base in the two games including 12 in game two. They left six in scoring position in each game.

Freshman shortstop Eric Fasnacht (Eden Prairie, Minn.) responded well to a bump to the second spot in the lineup by going 3-6 in the doubleheader while senior Mick Sawinski (St. Louis Park, Minn.) also went 3-6 including a ground rule double to the left field corner in the second game. Sawinski is hitting .455 thru the first four games, while Fasnacht saw his average climb to .364. Junior Elliot Powell (Minnetonka, Minn.) also had a well hit double to the right field corner in game and went 2-4 in the second game.

GAME 1: Augustana 7, Concordia-St. Paul 2
Concordia took the first lead in the second inning when freshman Ryan Poppitz (Plymouth, Minn.) scored in sophomore Kyle Dalton's (Minnetonka, Minn.) RBI groundout. Poppitz reached by getting hit by pitch to start the inning, and would also draw a walk to leadoff the fourth inning.

The Vikings tied the game in the fourth inning, finally getting to junior right hander Adam Kramer (Wausau, Wis.) in a three-hit inning.

Concordia reclaimed the lead in the fifth with junior Drew Turk (Plainfield, Ill.) delivering an RBI single through the right side to score Fasnacht who reached getting hit by a pitch. Turk stole second but was left in scoring position.

Kramer pitched into a jam in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with no outs by allowing three straight singles to start the inning to turn the Augie lineup over to the top of the order. Kramer struck out Jake Petersen for the first out, forced Jason Rasmussen to pop out to Fasnacht in shallow center and ended the inning with David Borchardt's liner to center.

In the sixth, the Vikings got to Kramer early in the inning again with back-to-back singles to start their half of the inning to end his day.

Kramer left with the 2-1 lead but with two runners on and no outs. Junior right hander Colton Petron (New Ulm, Minn.) allowed his runs to score in relief and he'd be relieved himself after pitching to four batters with just one out recorded. Concordia used four pitchers in the six run inning with junior right hander John Hayes (Lakeville, Minn.) getting the final out on a fly to center.

Kramer would take the loss in his season debut, working five-plus innings while allowing three earned runs on 11 hits. He struck out three and didn't walk anyone.

Augustana starter Kye Winter worked 5.0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk but hit four Concordia hitters as well. He took a no decision as Bennett Johnson pitched two scoreless innings of relief to improve to 2-0.

Tony Viger led the Vikings by going 3-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs. Six different players had an RBI for Augustana in the six run inning that sent 12 batters to the plate.

GAME 2: Augustana 6, Concordia-St. Paul 2
After ending game one with a six run sixth inning, Augustana started game two with a six run first inning, sending 11 to the plate. The Vikings chased freshman right hander Yuji Suzuki (Toronto, Ontario) from the game in the first inning of his collegiate debut, with Suzuki striking out Augustana's third hitter Borchardt for his only out. Suzuki would take the loss to fall to 0-1.

He was relieved by senior left hander Griff Kilber (Chanhassen, Minn.), who was excellent out of the bullpen for the Golden Bears. Kilber allowed two of Suzuki's baserunners to score before enducing an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play. Kilber scattered five hits and a walk over 5.2 shutout innings with just 61 pitches to tame the Viking offense which scored 12 runs in the previous 1.1 innings prior to his entrance in the game.

Concordia had chances to get back into the game as they started the bottom of the first with back-to-back singles but followed with three straight strikeouts.

Augustana starter Grant Larson struck out 11 total in five innings on the mount, using the strikeout to work out of constant trouble.

Concordia also stranded runners on first and second with one out in the second inning, striking out to end the inning, and struck out with the bases loaded to end the fifth inning against Larson.

Augustana turned to closer Derek Quame for the sixth and seventh innings. Quame entered the day with four saves on the year already, and although it was not a save situation, the Vikings were looking to preserve the win with their best bullpen arm.

Concordia loaded the bases in the sixth against Quame but left them loaded for the second straight inning.

In the seventh, Concordia became the first team to score against Quame this season in Augustana's 13th game as Powell led off the inning with rope double down the right field line into the corner and would score on a wild pitch.

Sophomore right hander Nicho Roessler (St. Anthony, Minn.) finished the game with a 1-2-3 seventh inning for Concordia in his season debut.
