FAYETTE, Iowa - Concordia-St. Paul (19-5, 17-3 NSIC) extended its league-long winning streak to 11 games with a 67-66 road win at Upper Iowa on Saturday night at Dorman Gymnasium. The Golden Bears have now won 10-straight on the road as well, and are 17-1 in their last 18 games after a 3-4 start.
Concordia led by as many as 17 points with 14:09 to play, and led by 12 with 9:21 to go.
Upper Iowa stormed back but never tied the game or took the lead down the stretch despite multiple opportunities to do so.
Concordia's defense clamped down when it mattered the most as Upper Iowa missed a game-tying layup with 1:16 to play, missed a game-tying free throw with 41 seconds left and missed a game-winning layup just before the buzzer.
The Golden Bears scored eight points in the final 12-plus minutes in holding on to the road win.
Sophomore
Anika Whiting (Ashland, Wis.) led Concordia with 21 points on 10-of-15 shooting, adding five rebounds. She scored 12 of her 21 points in the second half.
The bench set the tone for the Golden Bears in building a 41-30 lead at the break. Sophomore
Amanda Barton (Waterville, Minn.) had 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting with five rebounds in 12 minutes while senior
Mandy Poke (Richfield, Minn.) added eight points (3-3 FG) and eight rebounds in 14 minutes.
Barton finished with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting and knocked down a pair of three's in as many attempts. Poke was a rebound shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds while playing 31 minutes.
Concordia's only other play in double-digits was point guard
Rachel Hansen (Eagan, Minn.) with 12 points and five assists.
The Golden Bears shot 43.1% (25-58) as a team, but made only 2-of-16 (.125) from three-point distance and were just 65.2% (15-23) at the stripe.
Upper Iowa was led by Whitney Kieffer's double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, adding four assist and three steals. Sam Thrapp scored 15 with four assists for UIU.
Concordia's defense had been lights-out throughout much of the 2012-13 season, but the Peacocks managed to shoot above 40.0% from the floor (40.3%) and made nealry half of their three-pointers (6-13).
The 40.3% shooting by UIU, still a solid defensive effort by CU, was the first time an opponent shot over 40% since January 12, snapping a 10-game streak, and the 46.2% three-point shooting by the Peacocks was the highest mark since the same game against Northern State (5-7).
Concordia closes out the 2012-13 regular season next Friday and Saturday against Southwest Minnesota State and Sioux Falls, respectively. Concordia has a one game lead over #25 Minnesota State and a two game lead over #23 Augustana in the NSIC overall and divisional championship race.
